Supplying Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets poses a risk of triggering a nuclear conflict, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has warned.
NATO member states are currently training Ukrainian pilots to operate F-16s ahead of the expected transfer of the aircraft. Kiev has been asking for the Western fighter jets for months, saying they were needed to combat Russian air superiority.
”An accidental, unintentional outbreak of a nuclear conflict is not something to be discarded, which is why all those machinations around Ukraine are dangerous,” Medvedev said in an extensive interview with Russian journalists, as quoted by TASS on Thursday.
The deputy head of Russia’s National Security Council cited the US-designed aircraft as a possible trigger, noting that Kiev wants them despite having no ground infrastructure to operate them.
”So if one of those planes takes off from a NATO nation [on a Ukrainian mission] – what would that be? An attack on Russia. I shall not describe what could happen next,” he said. “Such a development may not be even sanctioned by the NATO leadership and the US.”
Russian officials previously warned that delivering F-16s to Ukraine would be highly problematic, considering that the jets can deploy nuclear gravity bombs.
Medvedev said Russia’s standoff with the US and its allies was not at a stage that would force people to hide in a nuclear shelter, but described it as worse than the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The doomsday clock “is ticking” and has “sped up considerably,” he added.
The doomsday clock – a representation of the likelihood of a global catastrophe maintained by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists – is currently 90 seconds to midnight, having advanced 10 seconds last year.

i think we should support Ukraine to the fullest extent of war.
Ditching Ukraine would be a lot cheaper than fighting WWIII inthe future, or having to rebuild Ukraine after the NATO and Russia fight each other with tactical nukes, making Ukraine radioactive for who-knows how many thousands of years.
If we don't continue provoking Russia, we'll NEVER have to fight her in the future...all for the benefit of the MIC and the MSM.

I know of no republicans who agree the Russia should have invaded the Ukraine and should be able to keep the land that the now possess. However, they are there and they will not leave.
The question now is how to go forward with a war that Ukraine will not win. I don't have the answer but sending over hundreds of billions of $ to one of the most corrupt governments to "fight on" should be questioned.
In addition, this unfunded aid proposal to both the Ukraine and Israel weakens us economically as we are already $35 trillion in debt.
It is time that countries in Europe step up both… Read more
Before the West decides to keep the money flowing, because the spending is good for US defense earnings and bad for Putin, Ukraine citizens should have a right to vote and decide if they wish to continue the fighting, or seek peace.
It is very clear that the Ukrainians want to fight. Two years on and they are still fighting off their larger neighbour. Isn't this obvious? Do you think that the Ukrainians want to be occupied by a foreign regime that jails people for peaceful protests, that murders political opponents and that denies the existence of a Ukrainian nation?
I notice that you don't suggest that the Russian citizens should vote on whether or not they support an imperialist illegal war. Why not? You write about Ukrainians not being able to leave the country, but you ignore the thousands of political prisoners in Russia, who know they could be murdered at any time without recourse to justice. This is what awaits any country that the Russians occupy. The double-speak in your comment is mind-blowing.
