No, and raise the age requirement to 21. The US military preys on the impressionable minds of the youth.

Yes. I believe civil service (in some form) should be a requirement to vote.

No, but when a draft is activated, both men and women must be drafted. Women have a duty to serve our nation like men.

 @9SNQ6HT from North Carolina  answered…9mos9MO

Yes, but make it two years and with less focus on military training and more focus on education and skill development

 @9H4278V  from Virginia  answered…2yrs2Y

Yes, but it should be two years, and there should be an option of community service instead of military.

 @9GDDYW5Green from California  answered…2yrs2Y

One year of service to the country doesn't have to mean military service. Yes, they should serve their country for a year.

I support conscription, but it cannot currently be implemented in the U.S. because it would entail involving people into wars that they may not support. If U.S. changed its foreign policy conscription is a great tool for development and national unity.

Each should have to provide at least one year of service, not to be limited to military service.

 @StarwindSocialist from Maryland  answered…1yr1Y

Yes, but we should require at least two years of military or public service. Both with a focus on education and skill development.

 @96Y6YTG from Washington D.C.  answered…3yrs3Y

Service yes, but they should be able to choose if they would like to participate in civil service, such as americanos, rather than the US military.

 @94JFS6H from New York  answered…3yrs3Y

I would agree with a year of service, whether that be in the military or in a nonprofit organization or governmental department.

 @93N8N49 from Oregon  answered…3yrs3Y

I think all Americans should serve their fellow citizens but not only in the military. Peace Corps and Americorps and other such programs should be the alternative to military service.

Many people cannot. This question should say “able-bodied” and something about not being developmentally disabled.

 @8Y4SBQB from New Jersey  answered…3yrs3Y

Yes, but only for those who do not go to college or during a time of national emergency.

 @8XXW5LF from New York  answered…3yrs3Y

Yes, with an option for compulsory non-military public service for those who would rather not serve in the armed forces.

Citizens should not be required to provide military service, but they should be required to provide national service in a non-military context.

 @8PKZ5TC from Kentucky  answered…4yrs4Y

Yes but not limited to the military itself, some do not particularly fit in the military but should be able to choose to do a year of service for the country by joining Americorps or TeachforAmerica.

No it should be a choice. Also, there is no need to have a mandatory military service with our population. There are enough people who willingly enter.

 @8GD7VFD from New York  answered…5yrs5Y

I think a year of government service should be required. It does not have to be in the military, it could be another government agency (post office, etc) and it could be deferred for college or technical schools and apprenticeships

 @8QFKC8V from Virginia  answered…4yrs4Y

No, but they should be required to do two years of paid public service.

Yes, but only those with a criminal background and only if we have an abolition of both the 13th amendment, as well all incentives of both recruiters and prisons to meet quotas, would also add the abolition of private prison systems all together.
