In 1961, the South Carolina State Government passed a law mandating that the confederate flag be flown on the ground of its state capitol building. The law was passed to commemorate the centennial of the Civil War assault on Fort Sumter. Opponents argue that the flag is a political symbol that represents racial inequality and should be removed after the shooting deaths of nine African American church members in June 2015. Proponents argue that the flag is an important historical symbol that commemorates the state’s role in the Civil War.

Yes, States should *be allowed* to fly the flag because States are a sovereign entity that the federal government may not command. However, states *should not* fly the flag, because it symbolizes rebellion and racism.

If it is perfectly legal to burn a US flag in the name of free speech, then people should be allowed to fly whatever flag they want to.

No, the flag is a symbol of treason against thr United States and should not be given ground on any governmental ground or building.

No, only if it is being displayed as an actual historical exhibit on the property.
@8ZV44WN4yrs4Y
Only in a historical context with clear disclaimers about the flag being a hate symbol.
@8Y8BWM44yrs4Y

As someone who was raised in DC and saw the events of January 6th, with the confederate flag being flown next to the Nazi flag in the capitol, it horrified me. It is not a symbol of rebellion. It's a symbol of oppression. The civil war was about race and slavery. This is a fact. No, it should not be flown in public property, and where it does fly, hatred follows.

Ban any public display of the flag except at historical monuments and museums
@8N9S5SX5yrs5Y
only if part of a historical/educational piece

I believe it would be better for people to understand what exactly the Confederacy was standing for, the good and the bad. Then they'd be able to make more informed decisions and be able to see how others would perceive the act. I don't think it should be banned, as it is a part of the American history and something that, like all parts of our history, should be remembered and acknowledged as something that happened.
@8DZTQXJ5yrs5Y
No, we don't fly former enemy's and traitors flags
@8DGH7SH5yrs5Y
No, TheFederal Government should not dictate to the states. This should be a state decision
@9CHT6BB2yrs2Y
States should have the choice of what flags they display on government property within their state which could be voted on by the public however flags don't seem that relevant.
