Ukraine Launches "Balloon Bombs" Into Russia

At about 7 p.m. Moscow time April 20, “an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack using two small-sized balloons on objects on the territory of the Russian Federation was stopped,” the Russian Defense Ministry reported on its Telegram channel. The balloons were “destroyed over the territories of the Tula and Moscow regions.”The Russian MoD also claimed its forces downed five Ukrainian balloons on April 18. "According to Russian news reports, the Ukrainian balloons are equipped with a GPS module and carry explosives," The Associated Press reported.These claimed balloon shootdowns follow the discovery last month of a converted Ukrainian weather balloon “carrying a kilogram of TNT” that “fell in the forest near the village of Novaya Slobodka,” about 40 miles from the border, the Russian MASH news agency reported at the time.“They must fly over cities and drop bombs based on GPS signals,” according to the publication. “Weapons are intended for terror.”Ukraine is increasing the frequency of its cross-border balloon launches, MASH added.

U.S. Tanks Being Withdrawn From Ukraine War

Washington pledged 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in January last year. The first batch arrived in September. They finally appeared to make their combat debut in February this year, with the first video footage released on the 25th of Februray. On the 26th, the Russians scored their first Abrams kill.Two months after entering service, the Abrams tanks are now being withdrawn from the frontline. Five of the 31 tanks delivered last year have already been destroyed.The Ukraines are misusing the tanks.Its ability to maneuver at high speed and pack a huge punch gives it a battle winning role. When used as a pillbox however, it just exploits its firepower at the expense of its maneuverability. This appears to be how the Ukrainian armed forces are deploying it, and makes it very vulnerable to drone attack. Ukraine must adopt a mindset based much more on manuvre type warfare, where rapid combined arms action can unhinge and dislocate the very static Russian invaders. This will require require air power, artillery and infantry all working together with the tanks to punch holes in Russian defenses and run riot in the rear areas.

German Green Party Accused Of Lying Over Nuclear Power Safety to Force Plant Shutdowns

Green party ministers in Germany have been accused of lying about safety issues at the country’s nuclear power plants to ensure they were shut down, even as the war in Ukraine threatened European energy supplies.A German media outlet has accused Green ministers in the country’s coalition government of covering up key technical reports that suggested keeping the nuclear plants open would have lessened the country’s energy squeeze in 2022.Green ministers at the economy and environment ministries re-wrote documents to falsely suggest that retaining the power stations was “not tenable” on technical or security grounds.Chancellor Olaf Scholz subsequently ordered the operation of the plants to be extended by three months to April 2023 but after that point they were shut down as previously planned. At the time, Germany’s decision to push ahead with the shutdown of its last nuclear power stations – leaving it even more reliant on gas and coal – was branded “madness” by critics.However Green ministers, who were partners in the three-party coalition under Mr Scholz, continued to insist that keeping the nuclear plants open would be dangerous and irresponsible.
