Should passing the MCAS exam remain a requirement for high school graduation in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts is one of only 8 states that still ties graduation to a standardized test. Instituted in the 1993 Ed Reform Act to boost the state's lagging schools, the MCAS is credited by business leaders for making MA #1 in national education rankings, but loathed by the Teachers Association for narrowing the curriculum and stressing students. Proponents say it acts as a necessary quality control filter to ensure a diploma has actual value across different districts. Opponents argue it unfairly penalizes students with learning disabilities and non-native speakers while forcing teachers to teach to the test.
