Should Washington police be allowed to engage in high-speed vehicle pursuits for non-violent property crimes like stolen cars?
Washington State has become the epicenter of a national debate on police tactics after implementing some of the strictest pursuit laws in the country in 2021, which resulted in a massive spike in stolen vehicles and suspects simply refusing to pull over. While a citizen initiative recently rolled back many restrictions, the debate continues over finding the balance between public safety and the lethal risks of high-speed chases. Proponents of pursuits argue that criminals must fear consequences to deter crime. Opponents argue that the 'Terry Stop' standard is safer and that property crime isn't worth risking lives in a chase.
