  • Nationalism is a political ideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to a nation or nation-state. It promotes the interests of a particular nation, especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation's sovereignty over its homeland. Nationalism holds that each nation should govern itself, free from outside interference, and that a nation is a natural and ideal basis for a polity. It further implies that each nation is unique and fundamentally different from all others, thus it deserves its own political institutions.

    The concept of nationalism emerged in the late 18th century, coinciding with the French Revolution and the American Revolution. Both revolutions were driven by the idea of the right of self-determination and the concept of sovereignty, which are key principles of nationalism. The French Revolution, in particular, introduced the idea of "la patrie" or "the fatherland" which instilled a sense of national unity and identity among the French people.

    In the 19th century, nationalism became a major force in politics, shaping the map of Europe with the unification of Italy and Germany. It was also a significant factor in the outbreak of World War I, as competing national interests among European powers led to conflict. In the 20th century, nationalism played a crucial role in the decolonization process, as colonized peoples around the world sought to regain their independence and establish their own nation-states.

    However, nationalism can also have negative implications. Extreme forms of nationalism, such as ethnonationalism or ultranationalism, can lead to xenophobia, racism, and conflict. This was evident in the extreme nationalism that fueled the atrocities of World War II, including the Holocaust.

    In the contemporary world, nationalism continues to be a powerful force, shaping politics and international relations. It can be seen in movements for independence, in resistance to globalization, and in the politics of identity. While it can be a force for unity and independence, it can also lead to division and conflict. Therefore, understanding nationalism is crucial to understanding the dynamics of modern politics.
