On Wednesday afternoon, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan died after jumping from a runaway horse-drawn carriage in New York’s Central Park.
The horse bolted while the driver was out of the carriage taking a photo of the family, who were visiting from India to celebrate a high school graduation. Mahajan was reportedly attempting to save his mother, who had already been thrown from the vehicle, when he fell and suffered fatal injuries. The tragedy is the first passenger death in the industry’s history and comes just one week after a carriage horse died from eating toxic plants in the park.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other city leaders are now using the incident to push for a permanent ban on the controversial tourist attraction.
