A new wave of research reveals that political polarization in the United States is not just a matter of heated debates—it’s breaking apart personal relationships.
More than one in three Americans have ended friendships, family ties, or romantic relationships due to political differences, according to recent studies. Experts say this trend has intensified since 2016, with Democrats more likely to sever ties over politics. Psychologists warn that these 'political breakups' are fracturing the social fabric and making the nation more divided.
The findings highlight how deeply politics now influences Americans’ personal lives.

Honestly, it’s sad but not surprising that so many friendships are ending over politics—things have gotten way too extreme since 2016, especially with all the hate and misinformation on the right. When basic values like equality, bodily autonomy, and democracy are up for debate, it’s hard to just “agree to disagree.” I wish we didn’t have to cut people off, but sometimes standing up for what’s right means not tolerating harmful beliefs, even from people we care about. Maybe if conservatives actually listened and tried to understand where progressives are coming from, we wouldn’t be in this mess.
