As I do agree housing should be affordable to anyone, landlords should be able to raise rent if their property is up to par for said value they set it at. I rather believe the government should offer subsidies to lower socioeconomic individuals so they can afford rent and live. If you want a more luxurious life then you need to work more or have a better paying job. However I’m aware that individuals can have the most unfortunate circumstances that lead them to their current situation so the government offers subsidies that take stress off of individuals so they can afford to live.

Subsidising demand in a supply constrained market like housing will lead to rent price inflation and achieve absolutely nothing. Just allow developers to build more housing through deregulation, abolish demand subsidies like Fannie Mae and backed mortgages and end preferable taxation of real estate compared to stocks, so investors will invest into stocks rather than drive up housing prices.
landlords who own and rent properties for the sake of profit should be required to long in their buildings with the tenants
