The Barbados threadsnake, the world’s smallest-known snake, has been rediscovered in Barbados after being unseen for nearly two decades.
Conservationists and scientists had feared the tiny reptile, which measures just about 10 centimeters (4 inches) long and is as thin as a strand of spaghetti, had gone extinct.
The snake was found under rocks in the forests of Barbados during a dedicated search in March 2025. Its rediscovery brings relief and excitement to the scientific community, highlighting the importance of ongoing conservation efforts for species considered 'lost to science.' The find also underscores the challenges of tracking and protecting extremely small and elusive wildlife.
