The United States and Indonesia have reached a major trade agreement that will eliminate 99% of tariffs on US goods exported to Indonesia and remove nearly all non-tariff barriers.
In return, the US will impose a 19% tariff on Indonesian exports, significantly lower than the previously threatened 32%. The deal also includes Indonesia lifting restrictions on critical mineral exports to the US and committing to large purchases of American products, including Boeing jets. The White House estimates the agreement will open at least $50 billion in new market access for US businesses.
While hailed as a win for American industries, some observers warn the deal could challenge Indonesia's energy transition goals and raise concerns about trade imbalances.
