A Liberal MP from the Toronto area has apologized after making controversial remarks suggesting people should turn in a Conservative candidate to the Chinese consulate to claim a bounty placed on him by Hong Kong authorities.
The comments, made in January during an ethnic media event, targeted a former Conservative MP who is wanted by Hong Kong police for his pro-democracy stance. The Liberal candidate described his own remarks as 'deplorable' and issued a public apology. The incident has sparked criticism and raised concerns about foreign interference and political rhetoric in Canada.
The Conservative candidate had previously been vocal in supporting Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement.

This is honestly disgraceful. As someone who supports democracy and human rights, it's beyond troubling to see a Liberal MP joke—or worse, seriously suggest—turning in a pro-democracy advocate to an authoritarian regime. We should be standing with those fighting for freedom, not playing into the hands of foreign governments that suppress dissent. The apology is the bare minimum, but this kind of rhetoric has no place in Canadian politics. Progressives should be calling this out loud and clear.
So now we’ve got elected officials joking about foreign dictatorships putting bounties on political opponents—great to see freedom of speech and sovereignty tossed aside for party politics.
