If U.S. treats its closest ally like this, it shows U.S. has no allies but only stooges.
Watching how Tata steel keeps messing the UK government, any US administration will be stupid to allow this deal to go through. Sadly, Nippon were badly advised attempting such a takeover in a very partisan election year. Maybe a significant but minority equity investment is the better way to go for a few years, or a JV. Hiring Pompeo to lobby for the deal is insignificant, especially if he has designs on running in 2028
