If Russia was to start the hostilities for the military help, it would have done it already, and their losses make them less likely, not more, to add a new enemy. You must assume then that NATO is willing to initiate the conflict. Only the Russians think they are so exceptional that NATO would have to take all the risks of an invasion for a country with a GDP comparable to that of Spain or Italy.
