Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi has been elected as the new leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) in a landslide victory, securing over 86% of the vote.
Nenshi, who served as mayor from 2010 to 2021, received 62,746 votes out of 72,930 cast, demonstrating overwhelming support from party members. In his inaugural speech as leader, Nenshi called on the NDP to become an 'unstoppable machine' capable of winning the next provincial election in 2027. Despite his significant win, Nenshi currently does not hold a seat in the legislature.
His leadership marks a significant moment for the Alberta NDP as they prepare to challenge Premier Danielle Smith's conservative government in Canada's main oil-producing province.
