I would say that the public figure was accused of a serious crime and that the people change your perception of the character is that people would feel upset and talk about the accused of a serious crime that they do or didn't do.

they do, it doesn’t matter if it happened a long time ago they should’ve taken accountability for their actions and not only that went to jail for the accusations.
