A rare earthquake shook the New York area Friday morning, rattling parts of the Big Apple, Connecticut and New Jersey.
The preliminary 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Lebanon, New Jersey, around 10:23 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey.
Tremors could be felt as far north as New Paltz, New York and as far south as Delaware.
Kelly Shone, a mom of two who works nights in Newark, Del, said she felt a “slight rumbling” while in bed Friday morning.
“I thought it was my husband walking heavily downstairs at first,” Shone told The Post.
The extent of the damage from the quake was not immediately clear.
My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said.
Mayor Eric Adams said he has also been briefed following the tremors, and no major impacts had been reported in the city.
The Empire State Building’s official X account jumped into the fray online, quipping, “I AM FINE.”

If you had family or friends in the affected area, what would be your immediate concern and action following news of the earthquake?
@9LCTS4T2yrs2Y
My immediate concern would be their safety and If they had a place to stay
@9LCNDZN2yrs2Y
Yes, I would worry if they would be okay and if they are safe. I don't think I would care too much about an earthquake.
@9LCM8F62yrs2Y
It's relevant to me and what I can do right now for people that I may care about. It's something I can take action on.
@9LCLFD2Independent2yrs2Y
I see it as when. it's someone I know I would immediately be concerned.
@ISIDEWITH2yrs2Y
How would you personally respond if you suddenly experienced an earthquake in an area where they're rare; would it change your feelings about where you live?
@9LCV7C92yrs2Y
sometimes **** happens and life throws something unexpected at you, as people we should mainly focus on how to efficiently respond to these hiccups.
I think that the enviremnt and safety of yourself and friends matter
@9LCHLKW2yrs2Y
I think the government should pay for natural disasters such as earthquakes and storms and the damages, because what else would we use our tax dollars for?
@9LCH4DC2yrs2Y
no because there's barely earthquakes here.
@ISIDEWITH2yrs2Y
How significant do you think a 4.7-magnitude earthquake is, and would you expect it to impact your daily life if it happened nearby?
@ISIDEWITH2yrs2Y
Would the reaction of local authorities and buildings, like the Empire State Building's message, reassure you or seem trivial in the wake of an earthquake?
@9LCJGKR2yrs2Y
I think they should help re build if a natural disaster hits because you cant control what happens with natural disaster's, there's no way to prevent or avoid them.

Craziest thing is that people toward the epicenter in NJ heard what they thought was a major explosion. Evidently they were hearing the tectonic plates crashing into each other? Maybe I'm geologically ignorant but I didn't realize earthquakes produce that huge "boom" sound
My mom was right near the epicenter in NJ and her building (hospital) swayed and she said everyone heard a loud boom. She thought a plane crashed into the hospital! Do earthquakes make loud "boom" sounds? WTF!
@AmnestyEllieGreen2yrs2Y
really hope that was an earthquake and not an underground nuclear test or something. The objects in my Jersey City apartment shook pretty hard! Rustled me right out of bed. I thought my building’s water heater exploded or something. Never felt one so strongly before in my life
