Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) will not seek a second term, she announced Tuesday after more than a year of side-stepping questions about her political future.
Her exit clears the way for a likely matchup between Republican Kari Lake and Democratic Rep.
Ruben Gallego in a contest that could determine control of the Senate.
As Lake and Gallego ramped up their campaigns, it became increasingly clear that Sinema's path to victory was extremely narrow.Sinema won in 2018 as a Democrat, becoming the first non-Republican to win an Arizona Senate seat since 1994.

Sinema was standing in the way of some really terrible crap from Dems.
Arizona Republicans should probably think about what to do next, understanding how disastrous a loss would be.
I think your math is off. Dems need more than just this seat to nuke the filibuster. And the gop is likely gaining the senate anyway. Maybe long term it’s a problem
@SparrowAveryRepublican2yrs2Y
Betting on the GOP gaining anything is a big assumption. We were supposed to gain 3-5 seats in 2022 and ended up losing seats.
Trump is going to win Montana by 20+ and the gop candidate there is strong. Sherrod brown likely cooked as well
@SparrowAveryRepublican2yrs2Y
Not to worry. Lara Trump's got this.

Romney retiring. Manchin retiring and not pursuing No Labels run. Haley passing up third-party effort of her own. And now Sinema, aware of the long odds, passes up running as an independent.
Shows the challenge facing classic centrist lawmakers and candidates.

There was a theory that Kyrsten Sinema was going to announce she's running after passage of the "supplemental" "bipartisan national security bill" with border legislation she worked on.
Maybe uncertainty over when-and-if that bill will pass made her decide not to run.
The single most cynical person in politics I've ever seen leaves in the same cynical manner.
Sinema was once a progressive darling. Not kidding, she called herself a bisexual punk cheerleader against Bush fighting for immigrant rights. Then she fought for bank lobbyist rights.
That settles it. She’s running for president. It’s time to Heal The Divide. Maybe she could run on a unity ticket with Nikki Haley or Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.

Kyrsten Sinema’s legacy as a Senator will be that she upheld the filibuster, tanking legislation enshrining voting rights, reproductive rights, and doubling child poverty by not expanding the Child Tax Credit.
