Private prisons are incarceration centers that are run by a for-profit company instead of a government agency. The companies that operate private prisons are paid a per-diem or monthly rate for each prisoner they keep in their facilities. In 2016 8.5% of the prisoner population was housed in private prisons. This is an 8% decline since 2000. Opponents of private prisons argue that incarceration is a social responsibility and that entrusting it to for-profit companies is inhumane. Proponents argue that prisons run by private companies are consistently more cost effective than those run by…

Government shouldn't hire anything, allow private prisons to operate without aid of government.
@B634PY3Republican3mos3MO
No this leads to corruption from officials investing or being bribed to keep sentencing everyone who commits a crime no matter how small, we need to bring back the death penalty for murderers and rapists and actually do it no sitting on death row for 5, 10, 20 and 50 years, theres no point in paying all that money to jail these people. waste of tax money.
@KindredburkeLibertarian 1yr1Y
Both government run and private prisons lead to forms of slavery and torture. Prisons should only exist for people who committed violent crimes, felonies or large-scale crime. They should be run by either the government or private companies but should be closely monitored by a 3rd party to ensure the prisoners' rights are not being violated.
@6YGTH6XLibertarian 1yr1Y
Yes, but provide incentives to reduce recidivism, such as financial incentives for successful job placement once prisoners are released.
@9R6H2FTRepublican1yr1Y
No, I don’t have much knowledge on the subject but based on what information is shown here it sounds to me like such prisons have too much incentive to fill themselves up — think about that one a while…
@3H6X5RQLibertarian 1yr1Y
Yes. However, privately run incarceration systems should profit solely on rehabilitation and education rates and penalized on recidivism rates.
@9MZC778Libertarian1yr1Y
No as currently practiced, but if we can shift the contracts to reward reductions un recitivism I could support them.
@9JPFXR2Libertarian2yrs2Y
Regardless, prisons should be for rehabilitation and corrections not punishment. the manor in which this is achieved is irrelevant, though i prefer private institutions not public.
@9H3SQM8Libertarian 2yrs2Y
I think maybe a mix of both types. Let us see which works best. Both systems should be strictly regulated to prevent mismanagement and corruption
@9G8LVV8Republican2yrs2Y
I feel all prisons should be run by people who can help rehab all prisoners even those with a life sentence. I feel if they have a purpose when and if they get out there may be less of a chance they will reoffend. I also feel when they get out they should be given help to find housing and to get and keep a job. I also feel if they have a purpose there may be less violence in the prisons.
@8F5PD86Republican5yrs5Y
Prisons should be self sufficient. Prisoners should have to work for room and board.
@9SPZ9JDRepublican1yr1Y
I think the prisoners still have a right to their freedoms and protections and that if this did happen they should still be guarenteed full protection as a US citizen.
@9DF5F8GRepublican2yrs2Y
Yes privately owned prison camps.
@9FCB642Libertarian2yrs2Y
Yes, and the government shouldn't exist
@84ZWD6LLibertarian 2yrs2Y
Yes, but only partially privatized. Kitchen, recreation, laundry, cleaning, and maintenance should be privatized, whereas security and wraparound services should be managed by the state
@9D4QLZKRepublican2yrs2Y
No. Don't incentivize the private sector to vote for laws that will imprison more people, and increase their income.
@84ZWD6LLibertarian2yrs2Y
Yes, but only partially privatized. Kitchen, laundry, cleaning, maintenance should be privatized, whereas security, rehabilitation programs, and wrap-around services should be managed by the state
@9CYKMRXLibertarian2yrs2Y
Wait, that's an actual thing??
@9BNL7ZBRepublican2yrs2Y
no matter whos in control, corruption will prevail
@95RM4MSLibertarian3yrs3Y
No, the government is the one convicting them, so they should be responsible for it.
@93MPHXHRepublican3yrs3Y
Whatever is most effective
@92VF3L8Libertarian3yrs3Y
They should have a choice whether they want to or not
@8ZRPYKKRepublican4yrs4Y
They can if they want to
@8YPV6JJRepublican4yrs4Y
Yes but only maximum security jails
@8XV73SJRepublican4yrs4Y
No, the government's one job is to enact the law, and they should not be outsourcing part of that duty to private business owners
@8X7VX68Libertarian4yrs4Y
Prisons should be manage at the most local level possible, while maintaining a safe environment for inmates and security.
@8WZFXB7Republican4yrs4Y
No, some private companies may make prison too easy for people who did terrible crimes.
@8WGSBQRLibertarian4yrs4Y
No, as currently practiced but I could support it if funding was based on reduction of recidivism rather than number of inmates housed.
@8W6J5YKLibertarian4yrs4Y
Yes, but under heavy scrutiny, and only the worst of the worst prisoners should go there.
@8TZ88RQLibertarian4yrs4Y
Yes, but only if those private companies are set up as not-for-profit.
@8TW3BW5Libertarian4yrs4Y
I’m fine with it the way it is
@8TQK9LSLibertarian4yrs4Y
Yes, Privatise the entire justice system
@8TF8946Libertarian4yrs4Y
No, private security companies should contract with private prisons, government is an infinite money supply
@8T8ZXY7Libertarian4yrs4Y
Yes, but the government should not pay them and should instead be run like a business
@8T3NY8RLibertarian4yrs4Y
yes, but eliminate contractual occupancy quotas and allow the prisons to use them for a limited amount of labour in exchange for low pay for the prisoner.
@8T37PWTLibertarian4yrs4Y
No, public-private partnerships are literally Satan
@8RRQWKWRepublican5yrs5Y
Yes this will eliminate corruption, but there needs to be more rehibilitation services
@8RQV52ZLibertarian5yrs5Y
Yes, but be required for federal intervention for misconduct and corruption
@8RPFLTLLibertarian5yrs5Y
The government should not be involved in prisons.
@8RLHXVLRepublican5yrs5Y
Private Military Companies, Private Security Companies.
@8R3HNVXRepublican5yrs5Y
No, the government is responsible for enforcing laws and therefore should be responsible for all punishments as well.
@8QNBS3GLibertarian5yrs5Y
maybe generally no, but it might be fine in some cases
@8Q9GLTXRepublican5yrs5Y
No, the government has incarcerated them we have a duty to ensure they are provided rehabilitation and private prisons don’t always have a reform plan.
Thst being said, all prisons should have a mandatory training program where every inmate works 40 hours a week and has to obtain an education.
@8PDJJJHRepublican5yrs5Y
No, this could lead to many arguments that could lead into terrible trust and leadership.
@8PCNT5VLibertarian5yrs5Y
No, prisons will sacrifice rehabilitation services for profit. Rehabilitation should be the main concern, especially for younger inmates.
@8P9TMF2Republican5yrs5Y
It would encourage them to want to grow, and then want more inmates. So no.
@8P8XD34Republican5yrs5Y
Yes after extreme background checks
@8NXCXTYLibertarian5yrs5Y
No answer. I don’t know.
@8NVMYKYLibertarian5yrs5Y
Government shouldn’t tell businesses what to do
@8NTYSYCRepublican5yrs5Y
Federal prisons should fall under mlitary police jurisdiction. State prisons should be guarded by state police officers
@8NMLWRDLibertarian5yrs5Y
No, and overhaul the criminal justice system to decrease recidivism and increase fast tracking and education programs for non violent offenders.
@8NL35CTLibertarian5yrs5Y
Yes and incentivize the companies to provide quality rehabilitation services while punishing those who break the law (ex. corruption)
@User12345Republican5yrs5Y
Yes, but eliminate contractual occupancy quotas and they should be strictly regulated to prevent mismanagement and corruption and should offer free rehabilitation services.
@8LVXJTSLibertarian5yrs5Y
Well what would a child molester get vs a mother that killed a child molester?
@8LTXMPKRepublican5yrs5Y
If it works best then yes
@8LM4BVWRepublican5yrs5Y
There should be segregation via groups and types of imprisonments. We should work on turning criminals into better citizens and consider a group to be trained into military options ( if they comply, they can work via a ranking system to be released via the general population/ or via the military.)
@FractalSevenLibertarian5yrs5Y
No, they should be run by non-profits with the goal of rehabilitating prisoners.
@8KNV8XVLibertarian5yrs5Y
No because they just want more people in the prisons
@8G592W7Libertarian5yrs5Y
No, incarceration is a social responsibility that should be entrusted to the government
@8J83LVYRepublican5yrs5Y
This should be left up to the private companies.
@8HT3VKDLibertarian5yrs5Y
Espistein killed himself
@BobBeastaRepublican5yrs5Y
Yes, but the results of the prisons -- focusing on recidivism rates -- should be prioritised over costs
@8HCZLY5Republican5yrs5Y
No, private prisons will sacrifice quality of care and rehabilitation services for profit. The profit these jails make create an incentive to send more people to jail. This leads to more people being wrongfully convicted and put away for petty crimes all for profit.
@8DNXXTZRepublican5yrs5Y
No, hire non profit organizations. eliminate contractual occupancy quotas, strictly regulate to prevent corruption, and
@8CGYBLVLibertarian5yrs5Y
No, states should control their own prisons and use them to generate capital like private companies do.
@9D2YKK2Libertarian2yrs2Y
Yes, as long as the human rights aren't stripped away.
@9CPRH8PRepublican2yrs2Y
Only if it decreases the defecit
@84ZWD6LLibertarian2yrs2Y
Yes, but only partially privatized. Kitchen, laundry, cleaning, and maintenance should be privatized, whereas security, rehabilitation programs, and wrap-around services should be managed by the state
@9CHM8MYLibertarian2yrs2Y
No, rehabilitation is what prisons should be for.
@9C8NDGPLibertarian2yrs2Y
Such a decision should be decided at the county and municipal levels
@84ZWD6LLibertarian2yrs2Y
Yes, but only partially privatized. Kitchen, laundry, maintenance should be privatized, whereas security, rehabilitation programs, and wrap-around services should be managed by the state
@84ZWD6LLibertarian2yrs2Y
Yes, but only partially privatized. Kitchen, laundry, maintenance should be privatized, whereas security and programs to reintegrate into society should be managed by the state
@9B5CG66Republican3yrs3Y
Yes and No,private prisons will sacrifice quality of care and rehabilitation services for profit but eliminate contractual occupancy quotas and they should be strictly regulated to prevent mismanagement and corruption
@98ZM8CRRepublican3yrs3Y
Bring back the death penalty for murders, rapists, etc. Have the government run prisons for lower crime inmates.
@989XT3TLibertarian3yrs3Y
Private prisons have no onus to want prisoners to leave. Ever. I see a huge conflict of interest here. And this hits home for me, I live 10 minutes from one.
@97WDXMJRepublican3yrs3Y
No, we should abolish current prisons and return to biblical imprisonment policies
@97W2MYQLibertarian3yrs3Y
No, private prisons continue to make revenue with repeat offenders so rehabilitation is not an incentive.
@977QM3LLibertarian3yrs3Y
No, stop letting the government interact with private corporations.
@974P3FSRepublican3yrs3Y
I do not have a preference for this question
@maadiman1170Libertarian5yrs5Y
No, privatizing prisons opens the door to corruption of public servants and encourages them to get convictions regardless of the guilt of those being prosecuted.
@93NRSBKLibertarian3yrs3Y
Yes, but not able to make money on inmate labor, and after everyone released who were convicted of victimless crimes.
@92NZC9NRepublican3yrs3Y
No, they just need to make their prisons better
@92GZHY2Libertarian3yrs3Y
Regardless, the prison system needs to be reformed
@8Y5N8LJRepublican4yrs4Y
No, and eliminate private prisons
@8XD3P5QRepublican4yrs4Y
The military should run the prisons. Reduce the chances of corruption.
@8LBJYJCRepublican5yrs5Y
It should be up to the states, but would need more info, on case by case basis
@8KTCW6DRepublican5yrs5Y
i think they all shoild be ran by the state no private
@8CM3X3HRepublican5yrs5Y
No, it is the governments sole job to establish justice, not sell it.
@8CHMMVHLibertarian5yrs5Y
no, rather the government should reform its prison systems for the rehabilitation of its prisoners
@8CN7P7LRepublican5yrs5Y
No, that what corrections is for
@8RPZ3MPLibertarian5yrs5Y
No, privatized prisons incentivizes increased imprisonment. However privatized police incentivizes higher standards
@8R7SQ2VLibertarian5yrs5Y
Yes, but regulate them and allow prisoners to select (within reason) which prison they will be going to in order to generate competition.
I need to be given more details.
No this creates incentives to fill the prisons. We need prison reform focus more on rehabilitation, job skills, life skills and coping skills.
The Government should privatise all of the Jails and prisons and there personel including correctional officers and staff.
@8PQPWS7Republican5yrs5Y
should be up to the state
