Gaza War Opens Divisions In Left-Wing Unions

Since last fall, many rank-and-file union members have been outspoken in their criticism of Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 attacks, in which Hamas-led militants killed more than 1,000 people and took about 250 hostages. The leaders of many national unions have appeared more cautious, at times emphasizing the precipitating role of Hamas.The leaders, who are generally elected, may reflect the views of most of the 10 percent of U.S. workers who belong to unions. But that percentage has been dwindling for decades. By contrast, the portion of the labor movement that has been growing rapidly in recent years — Starbucks baristas, REI workers, graduate students, medical residents — skews young and to the left, precisely the demographic that cares most about the war in Gaza.“Insofar as the new energy is about those young people — and it mostly is — part of what comes with that is Gaza being a high priority,” said Ruth Milkman, a sociologist who studies labor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.Members of teachers’ unions have also parted company with their parent union. At the American Federation of Teachers convention this summer, when some members sought to amend the resolution on Gaza so it would call for a suspension of U.S. military aid to Israel, the convention’s chair did not allow the motion to go forward.

Vice President Kamala Harris has closed the gap on former President Trump in the states that have long been key to the party's 2024 strategy, but had been growing out of reach for President Biden.Before he suspended his campaign, Biden was trailing Trump by 2.4 percentage points in Michigan, 2.3 percentage points in Wisconsin and 4.4 percentage points in Pennsylvania, per FiveThirtyEight's average of state polls.A New York Times/Siena College poll out last week found that Harris leads Trump by four percentage points in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan among likely voters in the states.In 2016, polling underestimated Trump by nine percentage points in polls in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. In 2020, he was underestimated by five points in these states compared to the final vote totals.Polling offers just a snapshot in time and there are still questions over whether the Harris campaign can sustain its momentum for the next several weeks until Election Day.But polling shows that her favorability is rising. In Pennsylvania, the Times/Siena poll found that her favorability has grown 10 percentage points over the last month.

Harris campaign office damaged by gunfire in Arizona

Police are investigating what appears to be gunfire damage overnight at a Democratic Party-coordinated campaign office for Vice President Kamala Harris.The incident occurred just a few days before Harris is scheduled to visit Arizona as she campaigns for president.“We can confirm that on 9/23/24, what appears to be damage from gunfire at … a DNC Campaign Office, was discovered,” Tempe police said in a statement to NBC News on Tuesday.Tempe police said that officers responded Monday after calls from workers, and that they observed what appeared to be gunshots through the front windows of the office which is shared by staff members for the Arizona Democratic Party, the Harris campaign and Senate and House campaigns to boost turnout for the party in November.“No one was inside the office during the overnight hours, but this raises concerns about the safety of those who work in that building, as well as those nearby,” Public Information Officer, Sgt. Ryan Cook said in a statement Tuesday.The apparent gunfire marks the second incident of criminal damage at that office in recent weeks, according to Tempe police, who said that just after midnight on Sept. 16 the office’s front windows were hit with what appeared to be a BB gun or pellet gun.Sean McEnerney, the coordinated campaign manager for the state Democratic Party, also confirmed the incident in a statement.
