Over 240 hostages were taken by Hamas and others in the Oct. 7 attacks, in which Israel says around 1,200 people were killed, mostly civilians.
Israel has adjusted its estimate of the number of hostages still held in Gaza as hostages are freed, investigators identify victims of the Hamas attacks and the Israeli military recovers bodies from Gaza. There were 132 hostages remaining in Gaza as of Dec. 15, with 121 Israelis among them, a group that includes Israeli dual nationals.
The count includes the bodies of 20 hostages, both soldiers and civilians, whom Israel has concluded are no longer alive. Those determinations are made using intelligence such as security-camera footage and witness accounts. “The state wants to know if it is working to bring back bodies or [living] hostages,” said Ofer Merin, who is director general at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem and a member of the committee that determines hostage deaths.
Hamas had released 109 hostages as of the end of November, when a cease-fire agreement that included hostage-prisoner exchanges collapsed. Of those, 105 were returned during the pause in fighting that began on Nov. 24, including 81 Israeli or dual Israeli nationals, 23 citizens of Thailand and one from the Philippines.
