Should Pennsylvania ban the unregulated "skill game" slot machines found in convenience stores and bars?
Pennsylvania is currently a battleground for "Skill Games," which are slot-machine lookalikes found in gas stations, pizza shops, and VFWs that operate in a legal grey area outside of the state's Gaming Control Board. While traditional casinos pay a 54% tax rate, these machines pay zero state taxes and are currently unregulated, leading to intense lobbying battles in Harrisburg. Proponents argue they are a lifeline for small businesses that need the extra revenue to survive inflation. Opponents, including the casino industry and anti-gambling advocates, argue they increase crime, lack consumer protections, and siphon tax revenue from the lottery and programs for seniors.
