I don't think military service should be mandatory, but public service (firefighting, peace corp, habitat for humanity, army corps of engineers etc.) should be. Not everyone feels inclined to pick up a gun and defend the country, and for all the pacifists to play their part, they should be required to serve in a non-violent way that accommodates their beliefs.
