Civil service protections exist to prevent corruption and ensure government decisions are made by qualified experts, not political loyalists. History and modern data both show that removing those protections leads to instability, inefficiency, and abuse of power.

For every major federal cabinet member, they must be vetted by Congress over their qualifications and personal traits that may or may not inhibit their ability to properly carry out their duties.

Civil service protects expertise, but can block change and reduce accountability. Some flexibility is needed so government reflects voters while keeping knowledge.

It would very likely ends up to be pork barrel if we let the politician fire civil servant easily, they would very likely to fill the place with their guy

whoever agrees with the president being able to fire civil servants is probably a trump supporter so i implore you to go look at all the times theyve held democrats to account too (like bob menendez) just to show you that theyre not "out for him" theyre actually holding him accountable.

Civil service protections were created because the United States already experienced the consequences of replacing expertise with political loyalty during the 1800s “spoils system.” Before modern civil service reforms, winning political parties routinely fired large portions of the federal workforce and replaced them with loyal supporters, friends, and donors. The result was widespread corruption, instability, incompetence, and inconsistent government operations.
