Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to halt the war in Ukraine with a negotiated ceasefire that recognises the current battlefield lines, four Russian sources told Reuters, saying he is prepared to fight on if Kyiv and the West do not respond.
Three of the sources, familiar with discussions in Putin's entourage, said the veteran Russian leader had expressed frustration to a small group of advisers about what he views as Western-backed attempts to stymie negotiations and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's decision to rule out talks.
"Putin can fight for as long as it takes, but Putin is also ready for a ceasefire – to freeze the war," said another of the four, a senior Russian source who has worked with Putin and has knowledge of top level conversations in the Kremlin.
He, like the others cited in this story, spoke on condition of anonymity given the matter's sensitivity.
For this account, Reuters spoke to a total of five people who work with or have worked with Putin at a senior level in the political and business worlds. The fifth source did not comment on freezing the war at the current frontlines.

Russia will never take Odesa or Karkiv. Once how Ukraine starts pushing back when U.S supplies start flowing

Seems a bit strange to go for a ceasefire on the eve of victory, but perhaps they think risk-reward means it's worth trying.
My guess is any Russian terms won't be acceptable to Ukraine/NATO unless they're desperate, so Russia will take Odesa and Karkiv before negotiating again.

We've been hearing that since the start of the war with no real advances whatsoever. Truth is Ukrainians fought bravely in defending the country (after being manipulated into helping the CIA provoke a war), but the best they were ever going to be able to do was hold off the Russians for a while until Russia mobilized enough to overpower them with their superior numbers and equipment. They should have followed through with the peace agreement a month into the war. NATO can't fight a ground war like we've seen in Ukraine. This is just Bay of Pigs but on a monumental scale and risking nuclear war too. Our Western leaders are completely delusional, they've lost rich with reality.
Yeah and with another 1 million dead russian soldiers for Kharkiv.
How many soldiers can russia spare?
@CheetahAbigailSocialist4wks4W
A lot more than Ukraine can. But I'm all for it if he does want a ceasefire now, almost always better to save lives on all sides and kick the can down the road in hope of a peaceful solution.
@V0t1ngKangarooSocialist4wks4W
If the West was wise, they would accept the cease-fire and recognize the battle lines as Russian territory.
But knowing their track record of warmongering, this is improbable.
Trump is the only person that can stop this war.
@Gr4ssrootOcelotForward4wks4W
Exactly. All Russia has to do is stop invading Ukraine. Now who is going to foot the bill to rebuild Ukraine after this monumentally senseless destruction of life and land?
@SyrupWillSocialist4wks4W
Pretty sure nations will stop striving to join NATO when Russia stops invading and threatening counties
@KoalaAutumnPatriot4wks4W
Because all these countries are going to meet in Switzerland to discuss a peace, which they aren’t attending, and US Ukraine will be seeking support to escalate but now the focus will be on peace. Grandmaster move and correct too.
@HopefulOcelotDemocrat4wks4W
Because he is satisfied with the current battleline border. He has a land bridge to crimea. The big scare for Russia even as far back as 2014 was the possibility of losing access to the Black Sea ports from a western friendly government. Eternal wars do not benefit him in the long run. Just look at how 2 endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan played out for the USA.
