US President Joe Biden told Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a cease-fire with Hamas as the White House’s frustrations over the continuation of the war in Gaza grow. The two leaders, whose relationship has been strained by the conflict, spoke Thursday. While Biden pledged to support Israel against renewed threats from Iran and allied militias such as Hezbollah, he said he was “very direct” with Netanyahu, with the regional fallout from the war, now almost 10 months’ old, worsening.“We have the basis for a cease-fire,” Biden told reporters. “He should move on it and they should move on it now.”He said the assassination in Iran this week of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas and a key negotiator for the group, had “not helped.”Iran and Hamas blamed Israel for the killing. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied it was responsible. Privately, its officials have not pushed back against the claim.

In a defense of Israel’s conduct of the Gaza war, Netanyahu denounced what he called “anti-Israeli” protests against the Gaza war on college campuses and in cities across the U.S., accusing them of antisemitism and of receiving secret funding from Iran.He also rejected criticism that Israel has intentionally targeted civilians in Gaza and restricted the flow of humanitarian aid.“If there are Palestinians in Gaza who aren’t getting enough food, it’s not because Israel is blocking it, it’s because Hamas is stealing it.”Over 39,000 Palestinians have now been killed in the war, according to Gaza health authorities, who don’t say how many were combatants.Netanyahu also appealed to the U.S. to quickly send additional weapons, an implicit reference to the Biden administration’s decision to hold up a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs.“Give us the tools and we will finish the job,” Netanyahu said. “Give us the tools faster and we will finish the job faster.”

Five secretaries of state plan to send an open letter to billionaire Elon Musk on Monday, urging him to “immediately implement changes” to X’s AI chatbot Grok, after it shared with millions of users false information suggesting that Kamala Harris was not eligible to appear on the 2024 presidential ballot. The letter, spearheaded by Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon and signed by his counterparts Al Schmidt of Pennsylvania, Steve Hobbs of Washington, Jocelyn Benson of Michigan and Maggie Toulouse Oliver of New Mexico, urges Musk to “immediately implement changes to X’s AI search assistant, Grok, to ensure voters have accurate information in this critical election year.”Within hours of President Biden’s announcement that he was suspending his presidential campaign on July 21, “false information on ballot deadlines produced by Grok was shared on multiple social media platforms,” the secretaries wrote.Had the deadlines passed in those states, the vice president would not have been able to replace Biden on the ballot. But the information was false. In all nine states, the ballot deadlines have not passed and upcoming ballot deadlines allow for changes to candidates.“This latest episode is unfortunate, but it’s also an opportunity to deliver a collective warning about the need for action on behalf of America’s voters,” Simon said in a message to The Washington Post. “We are all united by the goal of ensuring that voters get accurate information — and that they seek out trusted sources for such information.”
