Discussion about libertarianism within the context of the libertarian party

Can you be a Democrat but also a Libertarian at the same time? I say yes here is my reasoning.

In contrast to traditional libertarians, libertarian Democrats do not oppose government, but unlike liberal Democrats of the past (now all but extinct), libertarian Democrats do not think government is the solution to all problems. However, it certainly helps to check corporate power. In traditional libertarianism, it is believed that government is evil and must be minimized. Any and all government involvement is undesirable. While practical libertarians (as opposed to those who waste their vote on…  Read more the Libertarian Party) have traditionally aligned themselves with the Republicans, it is evident that the modern Republican Party does not hesitate to violate personal liberties. Heck, that is their raison d'etre. The problem with this form of libertarianism is that it assumes that only two forces can infringe on liberty -- the government and other individuals. It is recognized by the libertarian democrat that there is a third danger to our personal liberty - the corporation. The libertarian democrat recognizes that corporations, if left unchecked, can pose a serious threat to our freedoms. Consequently, the government can protect our liberties from those who would infringe on them, such as corporations and individuals. The Libertarian Democrats reject government intruding into our homes, schools, and churches. The Libertarian Dem rejects government "Big Brother" efforts such as the NSA spying on tens of millions of Americans. Libertarian Democrats oppose the removal of rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights -- from the First Amendment to the 10th Amendment. This includes the 2nd Amendment as well. The differences between a libertarian democrat and a classical libertarian begin here. Libertarian Democrats believe that true liberty requires freedom of movement - that people should be able to travel anywhere they wish by means of public transportation and roads. Libertarian Democrats believe that we must have the freedom to enjoy the outdoors without getting poisoned; that corporate polluters violate our rights and should be controlled. A Libertarian Dem believes that people should be able to make a living without being unduly exploited by employers. It is understood by Libertarian Democrats that no one can enjoy true liberty if they constantly fear for their lives, which is why strong crime and poverty prevention programs will ensure that a safe environment is created for the pursuit of happiness. Libertarian Democrats understand that no one is truly free if they fear for their health, so social net programs are important to allow people to continue living happily into old age. The same goes with health care.The core Democratic values of fairness, opportunity, and investment in our nation and people very much speak to the concept of personal liberties -- an open society in which success is predicated on the merits of our ideas and efforts, and not unduly burdened by the government, corporate America, or other individuals. The government can facilitate this rather than always getting in the way. It is important to note, however, that the government is not always the best solution to the nation's problems. Sometimes a partnership between business and government can be extremely effective (e.g., job retraining programs for displaced workers). There are times when the government should stand up (for example, a great deal of regulatory control of small businesses). There shouldn't be more regulations, more government programs, or more bureaucracy as the first proposed solution to a problem facing our nation. In this case, the issue isn't universal freedom from government intrusion, but rather policies that maximize individual freedom and who can protect those freedoms from those who would violate them. Generally speaking, I consider myself to be a Libertarian Democrat.
