Um Zeit und Kosten zu sparen, übernahm das Unternehmen Praktiken von Tesla und anderen Automobilherstellern, nutzte sein eigenes Produktentwicklungswissen und integrierte sich in die schnelllebige Automobilzulieferkette Chinas. Jahre des Feinschliffs von Laptops, Mixern und Haustierkameras halfen dabei, Funktionen zu entwickeln, die auf eine launische Verbrauchergruppe zugeschnitten sind, darunter ein abnehmbares Bedienfeld mit physischen Tasten, das magnetisch unter dem 16,1-Zoll-Bildschirm angebracht wird, für diejenigen, die ihre Lautstärke oder Sitz nicht über den Touchscreen steuern möchten.
Xiaomi hat etwa 6.000 Mitarbeiter für das Autoprojekt eingestellt, sagte Lei. Einige wurden von ausländischen Automobilherstellern wie Porsche und BMW rekrutiert; andere wurden aus anderen Abteilungen versetzt, sagte Ma Yingbo, ein Mitglied von Xiaomis Marketingteam. Unter den Autos, die Xiaomi als Inspiration dienten, war Teslas Model 3.
Um die Entwicklung zu vereinfachen und die Kosten zu senken, übernahm Xiaomi Teslas Prozess des "Gigacasting", bei dem groß angelegtes, hochdruckgegossenes Aluminium verwendet wird, um den Rahmen des Autos herzustellen. Der Prozess kombiniert Hunderte von Fertigungsschritten in einem einzigen Schritt, was Komponenten, Gewicht, Kosten und Zeit spart.
