The recreational use of cannabis has been legalized in 19 U.S. states and Washington D.C. Another 12 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands have decriminalized its use. Commercial distribution of cannabis has been legalized in all jurisdictions where possession has been legalized, except for D.C. Personal cultivation for recreational use is allowed in all of these jurisdictions except for Washington State and New Jersey. Proponents argue that marijuana sales bring in tax revenue for states and cut down on non-violent drug incarcerations. Opponents argue that marijuana is a powerful recreational drug that can lead to addiction and psychosis.

Marijuana is the common drug amongst users, but it does have health benefits behind it. The biggest problem we have is how do we tax it, how do control growers/farms and if your state legalized it, do we release dealers and users from jail and commute their sentence?
@HelcovichEmireRepublican2mos2MO
In my libtard state, marijuana is legal. People smoke it everywhere, even in a crowd of 100s of people, and it stinks like hell. It is like poisoning us! The liberals complain about companies putting CO2 in our atmosphere, but they have no problem with people putting marijuana smoke in our atmosphere, even though marijuana smoke contains many cancer-causing chemicals, much worse than some carbon-dioxide!
@99SDLCJ2yrs2Y
we love weed
@HelcovichEmireRepublican2mos2MO
Well, I hate it and so do a bunch of other people, so don't smoke it within 100 feet of any one of us! And if you do, we will shove your stupid cigarette or whatever your using down your throat!
war torn family's by Parkinson's disease, mentally disabled american's, depressed american's, children with lung cancer, the list goes boy, hemp is not just meant to be smoked, its a fantastic body ointment, and plenty of remades made just at home to clear up your digestive system, to say it should be illegal, it wont stop a thing though, if fentanyl is roaming the streets what makes the government think a little grass is gonna be the first to go.
@9FLXWW52yrs2Y
Many need maryjane to calm down, it doesnt make you go haywire. people with ADHD and chronic pain use maryjane all the time to help with whats wrong.
@ISIDEWITH13yrs13Y
Yes, and immediately release anyone serving time solely for drug offenses
Those who are under the influence of Marijuana tend to be non-violent, and those in prison for marijuana-related charges at the time of legalization should be released immediately, as they had violated a law that is now nonexistent.
@HelcovichEmireRepublican2mos2MO
Increase penalties for crime if the perpetrator is on drugs.
@ISIDEWITH13yrs13Y
Yes, and legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana instead of criminalizing it
@9FLYBGP2yrs2Y
More car, gun, and domestic accidents or violence happen with alcohol rather than marijuana. Marijuana is one of the least harmful drugs and can even help people with anxiety, and appetite. In my own experience, marijuana decreases the amount of violence.
@HelcovichEmireRepublican2mos2MO
Secondhand smoke is extremely toxic, marijuana smokers are essentially poisoning the people around the, as well as, of course, themselves.
@9FXBY6N2yrs2Y
If we legalize marijuana then the US prison population will decrease and non violent offenders won’t turn violent
Taxing marijuana could also bring extra revenue to the government which could mean more money for public services
@HelcovichEmireRepublican2mos2MO
If we legalize marijuana, many more people will be dying from cancers caused by marijuana as well as secondhand smoke. People should not be forced to put up with others around them poisoning the air they breathe, and whenever someone tells someone to stop smoking near them, guess what happens? Yep, the smoker beats them up, because they aren't thinking clearly, and people who do drugs are typically thugs.
@ISIDEWITH14yrs14Y
No
@9FTRVP72yrs2Y
Marijuana is known as a gateway drug, and the government should not be introducing drugs to their citizens.
@9H4RZQX2yrs2Y
One should look history behind why marijuana became illegal in the first place. Two words: Racism and Harry Anslinger.
@9FDN3NZ2yrs2Y
@9H56YBJ2yrs2Y
It’s a tough topic and very personal. I never thought I’d be a medical pot user. As my condition has become painful and chronic the pot helps.
@ISIDEWITH13yrs13Y
No, and increase penalties for non-violent drug offenders
who the actual hell do you think you are meddling into regular peoples life, if they want to smoke that za i say that let them.
@HelcovichEmireRepublican3mos3MO
Not if they smoke it in public and force everyone else to smell their pot
@9GD86YX2yrs2Y
Marijuana actually helps a lot of people, and there are so many other things that we need to be worried about, not filling up our prisons with minor drug offenses.
@HelcovichEmireRepublican3mos3MO
No, the extremely violent ones need to be put on death row to make more room for drug offenders in our prisons.
Removed by author2yrs2Y
Marijuana is a non-violent drug, or in other words, those who are 'high' tend to be non-violent and normally keep to themselves, so it is not logical to put them in prison.
@9G396WM2yrs2Y
In support of bodily autonomy and due to the fact that marijuana is a less harmful substance than alcohol, and actually proven to decrease symptoms of physical (Parkinson's) and mental (anxiety) conditions, it should be federally legalized.
@ISIDEWITH14yrs14Y
Yes, but only for medical use
@9FTRVP72yrs2Y
The "Yes, but only for medical use," argument for marijuana is a stupid one at best. No matter what falsified studies show, there will always be better medicine than Marijuana. Allowing it to "help" medical issues, is hurting the general public more than helping.
@jwolfsg1590Republican 10mos10MO
Is that why this generation is more anxious and depressed than ever?
Ah yes, opioids and alcohol are so much better! /s
@8LZGZS85yrs5Y
Yes, and immediately release anyone serving time solely for drug offenses and also legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana instead of criminalizing it
@B2FF5HJ8mos8MO
Some drugs are bad though, certain stimulants like cocaine and bath salts can ruin lives. Other deliriants like datura and hallucinogens like mushrooms may cause PTSD after a single trip. Most of these drugs take more than they give to people, that needs to be considered when scheduling them and their legality.
@4QYCV8H5yrs5Y
Yes, I also support making marijuana use mandatory.
@HelcovichEmireRepublican3mos3MO
And I support letting people shoot marijuana users. F*ck you!
@NameIGuessLolSocialist 12mos12MO
I can only guess you were on marijuana when you wrote this? Hope it was a good time for you in any case lol
@5382ZY95yrs5Y
@4RW83Q95yrs5Y
The government has no right to control what a free citizen does with their own body.
@NameIGuessLolSocialist 12mos12MO
Agreed, I'm surprised we agree on so little though, just 10%? Goes to show how broad of a consensus there's been, I'm glad we can agree on one thing rather than no thing.
@4S44KFG5yrs5Y
Yes, release those in prison and clear their record so they can make a living. White men should not be the majority of people profiting from legalization after incarcerating black men and women for years!
@4SQQRH85yrs5Y
Yes but keep Monsanto's hands out of it so they don't poison it with their GMO's
@4RMX7N95yrs5Y
Marijuana is a god given medicine. The research shows many medicinal properties with little side effects for major illnesses. Cannabis oil is becoming more and more useful with chronic illness in many. I would rather see Alcohol be banned before Cannabis. As strange as this sounds I don't think it should be legalized for everyday, everybody use. When this government gets it's hands on anything they destroy it. This is a natural plant, by the time they finish with it, it would become useless. No, the government should not have control over this at all.
@4Q82GJQ5yrs5Y
Seems we are on our way to that, but it will further dumb down America
@92XTX7C3yrs3Y
Yes, but only for medical use and ban alcohol
@4VXXD5Y5yrs5Y
Let's do some real scientific studies on the effects of high and chronic (no pun intended) THC exposures (such as are now occurring in Colorado and Washington) before we legalize anything. It's not the harmless herb we've been told.
@54VJX765yrs5Y
@54WX2TS5yrs5Y
Drug sellers and traffickers, should be punished to the highest extent of the law MINIMUM of 40 years in prison. Those who are addicted and refuse help, give them a choice, of NO DRUGS OR PRISON. After they are helped, THEY pay for their rehab cost.
@4SB3RS35yrs5Y
Yes, but for real medical uses. Such as cancerous diseases. Not something like back pain.
@4SHTWN35yrs5Y
Yes, and add age restrictions and a Cancer warning.
@4SHG42D5yrs5Y
Yes, and flood the market with all the marijuana currently held by the Border Patrol. Increase the penalties for anyone convicted of a crime resulting in injury or death to another person when the perpetrator was under the influence of marijuana.
@4YL7VLZ5yrs5Y
If weed becomes legal I will set off the nukes in America
How would it effect you? If you don't smoke, asides from smelling it every once in awhile, I don't think it'd cause you any issue.
@Renaldo-MoonGreen10mos10MO
You have access to nukes?
@B63GY3D2mos2MO
I do not support legalization of marijuana because marijuana is very dangerous and it can kill you or you can get arrested for smoking marijuana.
@9WKW9FS1wk1W
“you can get arrested for smoking marijuana.”
What? You're saying you're against the legalization of marijuana because it's illegal?
@9B7FJ5P2yrs2Y
oui mais la réglementer comme l'alcool
@4QYDY475yrs5Y
Add labels, warning signs, child locks, etc. for anything containing marijuana and legalize.
@4QYF6FZ5yrs5Y
Only cannabis oil for medicine.
@4SM38BLIndependent5yrs5Y
I neither support or do not support this. Some people just use it to get high and many others use it for medical help. Either way it is still a drug that is only killing you softly, as they say.
@5BM36PP5yrs5Y
It is a ridiculous subject to have any controversy about, when our borders & the American people are not safe!!!
@4SPQGSH5yrs5Y
NO because I've seen too many people use "harmless" marijuana and become hooked on the harder drugs. I would agree to be able to legally use for medical reasons but only in pill or oil and only with an Rx from the doctor.
@526Z9PZ5yrs5Y
Figure out DUI measurements to keep roads safer and then legalize for all 21 years and older
@9CFSCL7 2yrs2Y
Legalize it and tax/regulate it. We also need some more research though. Strong evidence that it can lead to schizophrenia for those who are genetically predisposed.
“Strong evidence that it can lead to schizophrenia for those who are genetically predisposed.”
That's a valid point. Some studies have shown a correlation between marijuana use and a higher risk of developing schizophrenia, especially in those with a genetic predisposition. For example, a study published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry found that daily cannabis users were up to five times more likely to develop psychosis than non-users. However, it's important to note that correlation doesn't necessarily imply causation, and more research is needed to establish a clear link. How do you think the government should address this concern while moving towards legalization?
@58ZF5MJ5yrs5Y
Why would you hurt yourself like that?
@4S47QD85yrs5Y
Yes, but only for medical use and release anyone who is serving only for distribution of marijuana or use of it.
@4QK765B5yrs5Y
Allow research of potential medical uses and follow standard FDA drug evaluation procedures for those who might benefit from cannabis oil and derivative products. If successful, it would drop to a Class B drug instead of a Class A and reduce penalties for future abusers of the THC content per the medical process and process of law.
@599GRYB5yrs5Y
Yes, it does less damage to your body than alcohol does.
@4RGLZ3P5yrs5Y
Yes, but it should be treated the same as alcohol driving under the influence of any substance should be a criminal act and be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, there should not be any favoritism for first time offenders do the crime do the time
@4QPMMS95yrs5Y
Yes, legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana and restrict recreational use only for those over 25 years old and make it illegal for recreational use for those under 25 years old.
@9ZX83MQ9mos9MO
No, and increase penalties for drug dealers, as well as increase funding for rehabilitation and outreach programs for drug addicts.
@9HNVCYJ2yrs2Y
Yes, but only through the government and other trusted sources, to make sure it's not a gateway drug, or laced with other addictive and illicit drugs.
@B6JH6YM3wks3W
Yes, but it should follow similar consumption laws to alcohol, like restrictions on public consumption and being behind the wheel being not allowed
@B62J79N2mos2MO
Yes, and people should be allowed to grow their own marijuana unregulated. And cooperatively if desired, without businesses getting in the way out of fear of losing profits.
@B628SDSConstitution2mos2MO
Yes, but with regulation. I do not believe that the legalization of marijuana should lead to enticing advertisements or exposure encouraging use of marijuana. Marijuana does not pose harmful affects, however, we should not be enticing individuals to use it. I also believe we should end the enticing advertisement for alcohol and ensure we are expressing the risks associated with consuming it.
@9D8TB682yrs2Y
No ban alcohol cigarettes tobacco and pornography
@9CJ6CB62yrs2Y
Good luck, we tried alcohol prohibition a while ago, it failed miserably. Banning a substance that people regularly use is just a pretty bad idea most of the time. We can’t ban smoking, drugs, and alcohol, that’s pretty much impossible. We can’t ban pornographic content because that’s literally been so ingrained in society that it’s just about impossible.
@5FKTN3B5yrs5Y
Yes but not allowing anyone to be high while driving or while caring for children
@4RGTLLG5yrs5Y
Decriminalize it, tax and regulate but don't forget all the people that are sitting in prison for a drug offense of having marijuana on them. Wasting their lives away. Busted for a joint. There are too many.
@4QJM47C5yrs5Y
I say, study the accident rate in states that have legalized marijuana, and if it has not increased the danger to other people on the road, then legalize it. It could help our state's economy.
@4RW7ZQ75yrs5Y
Yes, start out legalizing for medical use only. Monitor societal effects. Implement reasonable punishment for offenders.
@4YJGTPZ5yrs5Y
Regulated to a point it is only legal at home. Let out drug offenders that are serving sentences for marijuana, thirty five grand in tax payer money for each one? Support medical research independent of the drug companies influence. Finally anyone can grow it, not just a few who pay to play. Hemp should be on the department of Agriculture's important crop list.
@4QKB76V5yrs5Y
Marijuana, Cannabis and most recreational drugs must be generally legalized as they are less dangerous than prescription medications. More people are addicted to Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycontin, Valium and Xanax versus cannabis and cocaine.
@Brandonnoe84Libertarian3yrs3Y
Yes, legalize it, release anyone serving time solely for drug uses, also tax it.
@9CCC96P2yrs2Y
No and ban alcohol cigarettes tobacco and pornography
@4RCTVXD5yrs5Y
It is a persons right to have medical marijuana. They should not be taxed like it is a cigarette. Edible Marijuana should be legal. Growing you own is not to be taxed or be illegal. Hemp is used for many things, stop cutting down the rain forest and use Stalks of Hemp, it used to be done. Not only does it save the trees and the planet, but it is more durable then tree's..
Release all people who were arrested for Marijuana crimes, not narcotics.\
The Federal Government has Methadone clinics, not just for Vietnam veterans. Close that program down. People are getting free pass for a dang… Read more
@B6NWV346 days6D
Yes because it can be used medically, but anyone that is serving time ofr crimes involving large and illegal amounts should still serve their time. For example, DUI's involving marijuana should still be punished.
@B6MSVP81wk1W
Yes, it should be legalized, taxed, and regulated and anyone serving time solely for marijuana related drug offenses should be released
@B6MRZ691wk1W
Yes, legalization and letting the criminals on drug charges soley for marijuana, but still tax and put the money to the coummentitys and regulated to a certain degree.
Well depending the reasons to use it, and if there are other ways people could reach the same things. And people should be released for having it if it is legal, maybe just make sure that it is more for medical and don't let people buy seeds and make their own
i believe it should me mainly used for medical use. if its used other wise then it should be taxed and limited to a certain amount. if its over the amount then actions should be taken for the offenders
