No

 @B5BG6H6Republican from Tennessee  disagreed…2mos2MO

Does it really matter what it's called? I think it is pretty cool being named after our great nation.

 @B3VGV2T  from California  disagreed…3mos3MO

In the United States
Several state officials from Gulf Coast states have at times supported the change in official documents. A February 2025 poll by Marquette University found that among 1,018 respondents nationwide, 71% opposed the Gulf of America renaming and 29% supported the name change.

Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America sends a powerful signal to America's opponents that America is willing to enforce her interests worldwide and will break precedent and norms to do so.

 @ISIDEWITHDiscuss this answer...5mos5MO

Yes

 @B5LGY9K from Oregon  agreed…1mo1MO

Why not? It shows other countries that the US is not afraid to do things, even if that thing might be dumb. It sends a message of control and power.

Indonesia used this strategy to protect its exclusive maritime economic zone in the South China Sea by renaming it to the North Natuna sea and bolstering her forces in the zone.

 @B4L3KBH from Texas  answered…3mos3MO

No, changing the name of important aspects of people's homes for no good reason is disruptive to the formation of culture and tradition.

  @ThunderRoseIndependent  from New York  answered…4mos4MO

No, it should not be changed. Ideally, it would stay the 'Gulf of Mexico', but if it should change, it should be the 'Gulf of North America', not the 'Gulf of America'/'Gulf of the United States'.

 @B5JP3PPLibertarian from New York  answered…1mo1MO

Yes, as this is a more accurate title. America can refer to the entire continent rather than just the United States.

 @B5K8S4D from California  answered…1mo1MO

this is such a non-issue this is so useless that is only creating unnecessary division for no apparent result.

 @B4D6KHP from Georgia  answered…3mos3MO

Yes!! For the sake of patriotism!! Also, five states touch it: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida!! It covers more of America than Mexico!!

 @B4FCJW4Republican from Georgia  answered…3mos3MO

Yes! It touches more of America than Mexico, BY FAR!! It touches five states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida!! Anyone who disagrees with renaming it to that is unpatriotic!! Preserve patriotism, NOW!!

 @B4JPM9X from Illinois  answered…3mos3MO

Who cares? different countries constantly refer to places by different names, why is this important or even a debate?

 @B5XCPM9  from Florida  answered…3 days3D

No opinion, I honestly don’t care. It’s a sea. Not some ancient relic and it’s not like it’s gonna be effecting the economy or anything like that by changing the name. People change their names all the time so why does it matter?

  @95CHPZM  from Michigan  answered…6 days6D

I view this as very unimportant. While it is a dogwhistle for fascism, whether it is called the "Gulf of America" or "Gulf of Mexico" has no effect on Americans.

 @B5XF4M4from Guam  answered…7 days7D

The Gulf of America sounds better but we should ask Mexico first and conduct opinion polls in the US as to how many people would approve the change. Assuming the majority of people vote for renaming and Mexico agrees then we can implement it

 @B5WVDZ6 from Michigan  answered…1wk1W

No! It's stupid and completely unnecessary. It sends a bad message to the world and causes tensions with Mexico.

 @B5VMT9GConstitution from California  answered…2wks2W

yes, but not for the reasons most would say, the reason I believe it should be changed to Gulf of America, has nothing to do with the country of America, it actually has to do with the fact that the continent that both are delegated to is called North America, therefore proper naming would be Gulf of North America

 @B5VKZD9Republican from Florida  answered…2wks2W

Personally I never was bothered by the name Gulf of Mexico, but Gulf of America is just as suitable.

 @B5TVZT4Libertarian from Texas  answered…2wks2W

America can call it the gulf of america but shouldn’t force other countries to call it the gulf of america

 @B5TR88T from Colorado  answered…2wks2W

Yes, for oil drilling, but otherwise no. It is stupid and asinine, but for official reasons it is needed to allow offshore oil rigs. I do want Nuclear energy more though.

 @B5SSL9Pfrom Maine  answered…3wks3W

I'm indifferent, the only renaming I really care about and oppose is the renaming of Captain Marvel to SHAZAM!

 @B5QJRS9  from Pennsylvania  answered…4wks4W

No, the name of the body of water located between Mexico and Florida is not and important topic and anyone who thinks so is an utter and complete moron

 @B5BWTLSfrom Guam  answered…2mos2MO

This is controversial, but split both gulfs, the western, Mexican-leaning side be the GoM, while the eastern, Florida/dixie-leaning side be the GoA

 @B58XFBM from Ohio  answered…2mos2MO

Absolutely not. What is the point of changing something that has no point but to upset people and make America seem worse?

 @B5373LV from California  answered…2mos2MO

they called it the Gulf of Mexico because America wasn't even a country yet. if trump hated Mexico so much, he would've left the name like that because most natural disasters that damage his Florida home are made in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, and Bermuda area

 @B4VZWWM from Texas  answered…2mos2MO

Gulf of Americas or Gulf of the Americas would make more sense and would be far less opposed by most.

 @B4VSLLL from Utah  answered…2mos2MO

To be honest, it doesn't matter because other places could still call it the "Gulf of Mexico" and just avoid that name.

 @B5HPLF2 from New York  answered…2mos2MO

Maybe Gulf of the Americas could be a good name change or none at all because it doesn't really matter

 @B5L5XC7Republican from Texas  answered…1mo1MO

It doesn't matter to me. Although, technically, Gulf of America makes more sense because it's the major port of the Americas.

 @B4HLRQ5 from Alabama  answered…3mos3MO

No, the gulf of Mexico does not need to be renamed when there are far more concerning problems in the world than the renaming of a place that is globally known for a specific name.

 @B4GL4ZH  from Texas  answered…3mos3MO

No, theres no reason to rename it that and its apart of Mexico just as much as its apart of America.

 @B4B7T9F from Pennsylvania  answered…3mos3MO

Maybe, only if this prevents any contract from becoming outdated and allowing people to use the loopholes of the name change to do any previously illegal activities.

 @B49S7NT from Missouri  answered…3mos3MO

No, but from my understanding the gulf was only renamed in order to allow offshore drilling for oil.

 @B476T4Panswered…3mos3MO

No, this is such a stupid debate that doesn't affect anybody or anything in the grand scheme of things so just leave it named the gulf of Mexico

 @B2TCN5W from Texas  answered…5mos5MO

I don't really care if it is called that or not. I get the reason to call it the Gulf of America because it is U.S territory but it is down near Mexico. So I am in the middle of the standpoint.

 @B459V6F from Colorado  answered…3mos3MO

No, this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of in addition to being a dangerous stress test for future imperial ambitions of the current administration.

 @B3ZKJBVIndependent from Georgia  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, this was an irrelevant and frankly stupid change, and there is no point in having a new name for the same thing.

 @B425773 from South Carolina  answered…4mos4MO

I understand that geographically it makes sense to be renamed to The Gulf of America, but renaming the Gulf of Mexico should not be a primary task to be completed on Trump's agenda.

 @B424YHT from South Carolina  answered…4mos4MO

No, it doesn't really matter and it doesn't really change anything or do anything other than just be a name

 @B2KMHDJ from Illinois  answered…5mos5MO

no think this is a really pointless thing to do more important things in the world to worry about this is just dumb

 @B2KMFTV from Idaho  answered…5mos5MO

It really doesn't matter - Germans call the Baltic Sea the Ostsee, but the English call it the Baltic Sea.

 @B2KM9YM from Pennsylvania  answered…5mos5MO

I don't see a reason why this needs to change. its not hurting anything nor will we benefit as a country from the name change.

 @B2KF79K from Ohio  answered…5mos5MO

no, because the Gulf of Mexico has been called that for over 100 years, and you can't just change the name also every other nation will still call it by its first name.

 @B2K8YHKDemocrat from Texas  answered…5mos5MO

that is the most unnecessary and childish thing ive ever seen. there are more pressing matters than to create a stupid, prideful excuse of nationalism.

 @B2JZRJ8Republican from Illinois  answered…5mos5MO

This is just a scare tactic by Pres. Trump to force Mexico to take action on illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

 @B2JRR55 from South Carolina  answered…5mos5MO

Gulf of America makes more sense than Gulf of Mexico however it is a colossal waste of time and resources.

 @B3MJPPR from Arkansas  answered…4mos4MO

It does not matter. I am not crazy about the name change, but it does not harm anyone and all maps outside the United States will stay the same.

 @B375HH6Republican from Texas  answered…4mos4MO

I Do not care weather is called gulf of mexico or america, as far as i care it could be named the gulf of pancakes or else.

 @B2Y2FC6 from Michigan  answered…5mos5MO

its over all not important and we shouldn't mess with things as small as that when there are bigger problems

 @B2VVB3Z from Ohio  answered…5mos5MO

I feel like there are more important things to worry about in the country rather than renaming places.

 @B2KYHSX from Pennsylvania  answered…5mos5MO

No, the nomenclature is cultural/dialectal, if someone wishes to refer to it as the Gulf of America or Mexico, they may do so. We should not be wasting any resources on renaming the Gulf.

 @B2KTZ4P from Illinois  answered…5mos5MO

It doesn't really matter to me, but I think Trump wanting to do this is a little much and not necessary.

 @B2JWC5P from Nebraska  answered…5mos5MO

Yes we cover more area of it than Mexico, but I don't see why it matters. If it's changed or not it doesn't matter.

 @B2K2D86 from Kentucky  answered…5mos5MO

who cares, the gulf of mexico is fine how it is, I feel there's no need to say gulf of America because Mexicans are still treated different so they should have different naming because they aren't the same

 @B3G9SRMDemocrat from Ohio  answered…4mos4MO

No

No

The President should not unilaterally change the name of something like the Gulf of Mexico

 @B4CFVS5Republican from Georgia  answered…3mos3MO

Yes, because it borders the following states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida!! For the sake of patriotism, yes it absolutely should!

 @B5TJPMGfrom Guam  answered…3wks3W

No – “Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors” (Proverbs 22:28). The name reflects a shared regional heritage. Renaming it for nationalism is unnecessary and prideful.

 @B5CH2XL from Kansas  answered…2mos2MO

No, I think there’s better things for our government to be worrying about than what that body of water is called.

 @B3XPYNZfrom Guam  answered…4mos4MO

Names have meaning and significance, but the renaming of geographical features should be done with respect for history and culture. The focus should be on unity and justice rather than national pride.
