Yes, and it should test more than just a basic level of understanding

 @9JZV4S8 from Colorado  disagreed…1yr1Y

No, most citizens couldn’t even pass a citizenship test

Nope. Most Americans don't have a basic understanding. Why would we expect more from someone else than we do ourselves?

As a former US History teacher, I can guarantee you that most students would not pass this test without studying. Hell, most Americans could not pass this test right now. Do I think that US History is important and everyone (who lives here) should know at least some of it? Yes, absolutely. But most Americans are wildly undereducation in all social studies because of the intention underfunding of education and the recent attack on what's taught in the classroom. In fact, my best student one year was a German exchange student. Not only did she get a 100 in the class, she contributed so much to conversations and got nearly a perfect score on the state testing. I had 6 students not pass that year (passing score is 40%) out of my almost 200.

  @TheHillbillyLordRepublican from Maryland  agreed…3mos3MO

The important thing is that they understand the American values and show a willingness to assimilate into our culture.

No, most citizens couldn’t even pass a citizenship test

Our schools don't teach our children enough to pass the Citizenship Test. Why should we expect immigrants to know more than our own citizenry?

 @9FNVJNP from Utah  disagreed…2yrs2Y

That is why it is important for immigrants to pass, because at least they have an understanding of the nation. We should not bring more people in that don't know anything, it just makes the nation stupider on average

 @ISIDEWITHDiscuss this answer...8yrs8Y

Yes, but it should only cover very basic and simple topics

 @9DB6JZGSocialist from Ohio  answered…2yrs2Y

Yes, but so should all citizens born in the United States

 @9DB6JZGSocialist from Ohio  corrected…2yrs2Y

born in the United States

including those born in the United States

 @8G67WCD from Wisconsin  answered…5yrs5Y

Only immigrants who despise Trump should be given citizenship.

I don't know how they couldn't. He is a nationalist jerk.

Yes, and it should be a high school graduation requirement.

 @9JZV4S8 from Colorado  agreed…1yr1Y

No, most citizens couldn’t even pass a citizenship test

This is excellent. If we require it for others, we should require it of ourselves.

 @8PY2B9C from New Jersey  answered…5yrs5Y

 @9BBKWFGIndependent from Ohio  answered…2yrs2Y

There already is a civics test, in English, during the naturalization process.
There are, however, waivers and exemptions if a person qualifies for one. Regardless, a civics test exists, there are three components, reading, writing, and speaking the civics test covers important US history and government topics. So this question is moot

 @9R99T9C from California  answered…12mos12MO

Yes, and natural citizens should also be required to take this test every 12 years to be licensed to vote

 @9BN5D2K from California  answered…2yrs2Y

United States should only accept white immigrants of high IQ who are already skilled workers and this should not have to pass a rigorous test

  @VulcanMan6  from Kansas  commented…2yrs2Y

This is just blatantly racist, and something tells me you wouldn't be able to pass this anyway...

 @8RG8BNS from Iowa  answered…4yrs4Y

 @8QMB987from California  answered…4yrs4Y

Yes, but natural born citizens should receive better eduction about how our country works and its history

 @85QWNPG from Colorado  answered…3yrs3Y

No, it is absurd to expect them to know all of our history when many American citizens do not, instead focus on skills that could be provided to various sectors via mental acuity tests in their native language. The most important thing is merely the background checks, nothing more is truly relevant to their longterm success here.

 @8NKBRSL from Virginia  answered…5yrs5Y

No, they should be properly educated on our rights and laws here in America, and set up with appropriate jobs and housing. They will learn more by actually experiencing life in the states.

 @9BQKHT3 from Ohio  answered…2yrs2Y

Yes, because people come to our country and expect us to treat them as 100% equal, and anything other than 100% kindness or gratefulness is racist, but go to their country, there is a good chance that they will not treat you with the kindness and respect that they expect from us.

  @VulcanMan6  from Kansas  commented…2yrs2Y

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

 @LuckyChucky411Democrat from California  answered…4yrs4Y

For what purpose? This question is poorly worded.
Historically tests like this have been slanted in racist ways and used to further the goals of institutional racism. While this information is important it needs to be insured that it’s being done fairly and with egalitarian goals in mind

 @8QVWDD7Democrat from Michigan  agreed…4yrs4Y

No, most citizens couldn’t even pass a citizenship test

Yes, like when there had to be a reading test to vote, there are too many white nationalists it would be too risky.

 @B5VHX5H from Virginia  answered…2wks2W

Yes, and the same test should be a part of required civics education for born U.S. citizens in public schools

 @B5V3JB5  from Texas  answered…2wks2W

For what reason? Our own Government doesn't even follow the rules and understands one's Civil Rights

 @B5TFSVLIndependent from Florida  answered…3wks3W

Yes, and citizens should too, our citizens are too ignorant of how the country works and we’d be better off if all in the country knew better.

 @B5T3YV9  from New Jersey  answered…3wks3W

Yes, but it should only cover very basic and simple topics and must come in all languages, this nation has no language.

 @B5RKNL7 from Arkansas  answered…4wks4W

Yes, but only a course that teaches the main language of the nation as knowing what George Washington didn’t do one night causing you to not be a citizen is quite dumb.

 @B5QHPDV from Texas  answered…4wks4W

Yes, but it should be simple knowledge that most U.S. citizens know, and be a quick and simple process.

 @B5NMKZQ from New York  answered…1mo1MO

Yes, however, I believe that it should be only very basic and simple topics. And I don't think they should "pass" a test, but I believe that they should get a certain number of questions right. Or maybe, they can take a free quick course on the US and then take the test.

 @B5N4BJ3 from Pennsylvania  answered…1mo1MO

neutral stance; we should still have them, but lower their difficulty, and make it less about getting dates or names right, and moreso about understanding concepts

 @B5KP89JDemocrat  from California  answered…1mo1MO

Yes, also every citizen once they reach the legal voting age should take a basic civics test to be allowed to vote.

 @B5FQ77Y from Illinois  answered…2mos2MO

no, but i think the people who dont have any criminal record, or have done anything wrong and pay bills on time or have a good credit score should citizenship the most or a green card or visa the least. If they havent done any harm in the country they should at least get a reward for it, and mostly if theyve been in the country for a while now.

 @B5BHMZX from Maryland  answered…2mos2MO

As our country lacks a national language, it should simply be limited to passing a citizenship/history test in their chosen language

 @B54ZRRS from Massachusetts  answered…2mos2MO

if they are willing to, yes. it would help their cause. It shouldn't be required, but highly recommended

 @B4Y3K64 from California  answered…2mos2MO

This question is confusing. Should ALL immigrants pass a "citizenship" test -- even those not seeking citizenship? Then it wouldn't be a citizenship test.

 @B4VGCYMNo Labels from Mississippi  answered…2mos2MO

Yes, but it should only cover basic topics and have translations (along with English) with the tester's native language

 @B4M8S49 from Ohio  answered…3mos3MO

Yes, but they shouldn’t be expected to know any more than what U.S. citizens know and the test shouldn’t be so hard, that even a U.S. citizen couldn’t pass it or well on.

 @B4KLCSB from California  answered…3mos3MO

Yes this will prove that immigrants want to be American's and they took the time to learn about our founding and our guiding principles

 @B4JDRQJ from Kansas  answered…3mos3MO

Yes, but it should cover basic topics that even an average citizen could answer, and the history aspect is too highlighted in the current test.

 @B4FGGSB from New York  answered…3mos3MO

Yes, provided they are determined to be mentally fit/capable of taking the test, and only as part of path to citizenship.

 @B4DN7YFNo Labels from California  answered…3mos3MO

Yes i think they should take a test or studie to get an understanding but if they pass or not shouldn't effect them

 @B492HZC from Kansas  answered…3mos3MO

I think that if they do that they will become migrant citizens. But to pass through the border they should have ID recognition and security to prevent chaos through our country and different countries. And we should still try to make peace with every country that we can reasonably ally with. We should support Ukraine against Russia and hope for better to happen than war but if we have to fight Russia we should and that is when we should increase military spending just like Ronald Reagan did when he tried to protect his country and make peace with other countries.

 @B48J9HHanswered…3mos3MO

No because how do you expect someone to be related with all this topics and they are from another I understand taking a small test about the constitution and the rules but language and history i feel like is way to much

 @B43TCKX from North Carolina  answered…4mos4MO

Not really, our country (technically) shouldn't have a language, and if the Immigrants are seeking asylum in America they shouldn't be required to learn about a new country just to enter it

 @B43HWK2Constitution from Pennsylvania  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, and this test should be applied to all citizens to ensure they have a basic understanding of our country's functions. Many citizens today would be unable to pass the citizenship test.

 @B3X3BRP from New York  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, but it should only very basic and simple topics, and we should increase education for our own citizens so they can also pass a citizenship test

 @B3VGV2T  from California  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, as part of the naturalization process in the United States, immigrants are required to pass a citizenship test that assesses their knowledge of US history, government, and the English language

 @B3R46CL from Pennsylvania  answered…4mos4MO

No, most citizens cannot pass the test. Maybe courses on our laws for immigrants for a basic understanding.

 @B3QM2V9 from California  answered…4mos4MO

Yes and it shouldn't cost as much as it does. Our own citizens should also have to pass that test to graduate high school

 @B3N675CDemocrat from Michigan  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, and all natural born citizens should be required to pass a the same test to earn an accredited HS diploma or GED.

 @B3JGS9Z from Texas  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, she should know the basic concepts like how to drive in America and have a basic understanding of how the United States came to be. As well as background checks.

 @B3G8W2R from California  answered…4mos4MO

Most immigrants know more about our political system, civics, and US history than native born US citizens.

 @B3FZW4P from California  answered…4mos4MO

If they would like to become a US citizen then yes. They should not be required to pass a citizenship test if they are not applying for full citizenship.

 @B3FYBHC from Michigan  answered…4mos4MO

yes and also make U.S. citizens be required to take the same civics test as a highschool graduation requirement

 @B3FHP67Women’s Equality from Virginia  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, but the test should be one passable by actual citizens, or they have to provide proof that they lived while raising money for over 2 years.

 @B3DPRMP from Iowa  answered…4mos4MO

Yes. But it needs to cover the core concepts of American civics, come with study guides, and in every international language out there, and be specifically crafted in a manner that would easily allow the average person to pass.

 @B39MR8Nfrom Washington  answered…4mos4MO

yes, but it should be a test to prove they align with beliefs such as womens and lgbt rights and workers rights, also gun rights.

  @TheHillbillyLordRepublican  from Maryland  answered…4mos4MO

Yes, they must know our language, our culture as well as some basic knowledge of how our country was created and they must honor traditional American values to become a US citizen, but they don't need to know how our government works. They also need to realize that traditional American culture is superior to all other cultures, including their home culture, and be willing to fully assimilate into our culture.

Yes, Only if you talk about the real history of America. The racism the killing of Native Americans. The truth.

 @B352KC6 from Tennessee  answered…5mos5MO

They do not need to know our language history or government, they just need to show that they are not going to compromise or harm America.

 @B2Z43M2Independent from Missouri  answered…5mos5MO

Legal immigrants should at least speak english but passing a citizenship test should be used as a qualifier for naturalization and citizen status.

 @B2T4VSMRepublican from Texas  answered…5mos5MO

No, but the government should increase incentives for being knowledgeable in our history, government etc.

 @B2S8WN3 from Indiana  answered…5mos5MO

Yes but it needs to be something that it should be something that even people originally from the US can answer

 @B2S5B9P from Texas  answered…5mos5MO

Yes, but it should cover the laws they will be expected to follow as a citizen and the processes they now have access to, such as how to vote

 @B2S32PN from Wisconsin  answered…5mos5MO

Yes, but all U.S. citizens should also be required to pass a citizenship test in order to graduate high school.

 @B2R5BGRSocialist from Connecticut  answered…5mos5MO

An optional course should be available to teach the systems and laws of the country to all who choose to take it.

 @B2QDB5J from California  answered…5mos5MO

Yes, it should be done, but not for everyone, only for those who arrived when they were young and had the opportunity to study.

 @B2Q9CDP from Oregon  answered…5mos5MO

No and instead of attacking or rebelling against the government for it people should make suggestions for this issue peacefully.

 @B2LRVB8  from Minnesota  answered…5mos5MO

Yes but the test should be about topics of current day American life and life skills needed to live in the country

 @B2M67YN from New York  answered…5mos5MO

Yes - however, make it very basic topics and it should be information that every U.S citizen, born here or immigrated, knows. If a natural born citizen doesn't know it it shouldn't be on the test

 @6S6RGFWProgressive  from South Carolina  answered…5mos5MO

Yes, they need to understand how to navigate the services they would now have access to like voting and social security

  @TheHillbillyLordRepublican  from Maryland  answered…6mos6MO

Yes, but only our language and important historical events. They don't need to know how our government works, they just need to know our culture and be willing to assimilate into our culture.

 @B2G9CFJ from California  answered…6mos6MO

Yes, but also requires US citizens to take the test too. It would be unfair to require this of immigrants if the people of the country they are trying to be a part of can't even pass the test themselves.

 @B2DD7QC from Texas  answered…6mos6MO

Yes, but it should cover current government function and basic policies not historical, fundamental language competency, essential information for living in the U.S.

 @B2BY8TV from Oregon  answered…6mos6MO

Yes, though it be more about laws and regulations because many citizens couldn't pass the current tests

 @B268FZFfrom Arizona  answered…7mos7MO

To be in the United States I do not see a point why they should have to have any government or history knowledge.

 @B2544FW from Maine  answered…7mos7MO

They shouldn't be tested on main history, but atleast test them so they know the native language the country uses.

 @B23RC2H from New York  answered…7mos7MO

They should not be eligible to take this test because they should not be in the country to begin with

 @B23FVRS from Virginia  answered…7mos7MO

Yes, but non-immigrants should have to demonstrate a basic understanding of our country’s language, history, and government in order to vote/pass high school too.

 @B238SCVGreen from Delaware  answered…7mos7MO

Yes, but only questions on things to assure they can actually live properly without struggle in america.

 @B22ZRXTSocialist from Ohio  answered…7mos7MO

No, but a test on the functions of our government, voting process, and responsibilites of citizens should be given and should be enforced to natural citizens as well.

 @9ZY8JJLRepublican from Washington  answered…7mos7MO

No, since the majority of immigrants would find it very difficult, checking background, and/or passing the citizinship in spanish would also be a great idea.

 @9ZWKHCY from Connecticut  answered…7mos7MO

The test should be changed from largely trivia to useful, functional information like understanding of basic laws, services and processes.

 @LoneLupari from Texas  answered…7mos7MO

Yes, this citizenship test should also be required in the education of every citizen in the US (native or immigrant).
