The United States and Indonesia have reached a major trade agreement that will see Indonesia eliminate tariffs on over 99% of US goods and remove non-tariff barriers, opening at least $50 billion in new market access for American businesses.
In return, the US will impose a 19% tariff on Indonesian exports, significantly lower than the previously threatened 32%. The deal also includes Indonesia lifting restrictions on critical mineral exports, benefiting US industries such as technology and manufacturing. Both sides tout the agreement as a win, with Indonesia agreeing to major purchases of US products, including 50 Boeing jets.
While the deal is hailed as a breakthrough, some observers warn it could impact Indonesia's energy transition goals and raise concerns about the balance of benefits.
