It’s honestly frustrating to see Texas lawmakers even entertaining the idea of school vouchers while public schools are still underfunded. Using public money for private education just drains resources from schools that serve the majority of students, especially in lower-income communities. If they really cared about giving kids a better shot, they’d be investing even more in public schools, not siphoning off funds for private institutions that aren’t accountable to the public. The $7.7 billion funding bill and teacher raises are a step in the right direction, but vouchers could easily undermine that progress. It’s wild to me that lawmakers are pushing “school choice” as if it’s going to magically fix the problems they helped create by neglecting public schools for years. Parents and teachers showing up at the Capitol should be a wake-up call. Public money needs to stay in public schools—period.
