“The people” mostly vote for party slates without much attention paid to down ballot qualifications. Pity the poor defendant in a trial where the party can quietly threaten withdrawal of campaign support next time around if a judge doesn’t render “the right” verdict. Even worse if criminal cartels are pulling strings in the background.
