The 2014 Referendum to Overturn Indian Gaming Compacts will allow Native American tribes to open and operate casinos off of their designated reservation lands. If passed the proposition would allow small tribes with little land to open dozens of casinos that are close to major cities. The proposition is backed by the North Fork Rancheria Band of Mono Indians and other smaller tribes who aim to open casinos that are closer to San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego. Opponents argue that the proposition will flood the state with casinos and threaten the business of tribal casinos who have been operating on reservation lands for decades.
