Referendum 426 repeals the death penalty and replaces it with life imprisonment without possibility of parole. The measure is on the ballot after the Nebraska State Senate passed a law banning the death penalty in 2015. Governor Pete Ricketts vetoed the bill. Opponents of the bill argue that too many innocent people have been executed and that over 150 people have been exonerated from death row. Proponents argue that the death penalty is a necessary punishment for heinous murderers.
