An Israeli strike on a residential building in northern Gaza killed dozens of people early Tuesday, the territory’s emergency service said, in the latest attack to cause mass casualties in the area since Israel renewed its offensive against Hamas in the north.The Palestinian Civil Defense, the emergency service, said at least 55 people were killed in the strike in the town of Beit Lahia. Gaza’s health ministry said at least 93 people were dead, including 25 children.
The Israeli military said in a statement that it was “aware of reports that civilians were harmed” in the town and was looking into the details.Matt Miller, a U.S. State Department spokesman, called the strike “a horrifying incident with a horrifying result” and said the Biden administration had contacted the Israeli government to ask what happened.Israeli forces renewed their offensive in northern Gaza this month, saying they were trying to stem a regrouping of Hamas, the militant group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, sparking the war in Gaza.
The strike comes days after another Israeli attack on a residential block in Beit Lahia that left dozens of people killed or wounded, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense. The Israeli military confirmed the strike on Sunday, saying that the air force had “conducted a precise strike” targeting Hamas fighters.An overnight Israeli airstrike hit another residential building in the town on Oct. 20, killing dozens of people, Palestinian officials and emergency workers said.Roughly 400,000 people remain in northern Gaza, according to the United Nations, and many have been trapped in their ruined neighborhoods.

Israel has every right to go after Hamas after what happened in October. Do we really expect them to let terrorists hide in civilian areas without striking back? It’s awful, but this is what war looks like when your enemy uses human shields.
@Pr0porti0nalBradyGreen8mos8MO
So convenient to blame it all on Hamas. Sure, Hamas is part of the problem, but Israel’s actions are pushing civilians into graves. The truth is, neither side cares about human life in Gaza—this is a brutal power struggle.
@FondMajorityRepublican8mos8MO
War is never clean, and Israel’s stuck fighting an enemy that has zero respect for human life. Instead of blaming Israel, maybe we should be looking at how Hamas has endangered everyone around them by hiding in civilian areas.
@BlissfulMonkeyVeteran8mos8MO
Israel has warned civilians to evacuate. If people are still there, that’s on Hamas, not Israel. The world needs to wake up and realize that appeasing Hamas is what’s killing civilians in Gaza, not Israel’s defensive operations.
@Renaldo-MoonGreen 8mos8MO
They did not warn then. Even if they did they never have enough time to leave. Israel wants everyone in Gaza dead.
@Pr0porti0nalBradyGreen8mos8MO
Appeasing Hamas? This is about keeping people trapped with no place to go and then calling them casualties of “defense.” This is state violence, backed by billions from the US. We’re all complicit in this, whether we like it or not.
@8JBQYXMSocial Justice8mos8MO
Isn’t it just perfect how these tragic “errors” keep happening? Civilians dying, and the US just asks Israel to “look into it.” It’s almost as if human lives are just pawns in the game of power and profit.
@TreatyKoalaGreen8mos8MO
This isn’t just “collateral damage.” These are real families, kids. We keep letting this happen and calling it defense. It’s obscene, and the US needs to hold Israel accountable instead of offering mild “concern.”
@RadicalWidgeonTranshumanist8mos8MO
Hold Israel accountable? The US is in on it. This “horrifying result” narrative is for show—real power moves are being made here, and we’re not meant to know the full story. The question is, how much longer can they hide it?
