The last scheduled debate between Vice Presidential candidates JD Vance (Republican) and Tim Walz (Democrat) is set to take place tonight. This debate could be the final major event before the 2024 election, with both candidates aiming to sway undecided voters. The debate will be broadcast live, with rules agreed upon by both parties. Analysts expect this to be a critical moment in the race, as it may be the last chance for the candidates to make their case on a national stage.
The thing Walz is struggling with right now is not his performance, which is strong. It’s that he can’t offer a meaningful enough contrast with Vance’s ethnonationalist answers to every question, from Iran to climate change.
Vance has a coherent but evil framework from which all his answers follow. Democrats reject the coherence that framework offers but accept many of its policies and basic logic. This leaves Walz trapped on unfavorable terrain
@NurturingP0l1cyVeteran2wks2W
Walz is playing on Vance's battlefield, and that’s a losing strategy. We need Democrats who are unapologetically progressive, who can offer a strong, moral framework that opposes ethnonationalism at every turn, instead of constantly compromising with it
The problem here is deeper than just Walz. Too many Democrats seem afraid to fully reject the right-wing framing, so they end up conceding ground on issues like immigration and national security. If we want to win, we have to offer a bold, progressive alternative that doesn’t let people like Vance dominate the debat
Nailed it. Walz might have good policies, but if he can't clearly differentiate himself from Vance's dangerous and xenophobic worldview, he's stuck fighting on Vance's terms. Democrats need to push back with an equally strong, values-driven message, not just slightly softer versions of Republican ideas
Walz and Vance agreeing with each other on lots of topics, on trade, even some aspects of clean energy policy, suggests to me in some alt political system — ie Denmark’s multiparty system instead of our two party system — we would have political coalitions of reasonable leaders.
@Koala1965Green2wks2W
forming coalitions with leaders who hold fundamentally opposing values can be problematic. Even if Walz and Vance agree on trade or clean energy, Vance's positions on social justice issues make such a coalition concerning
We almost had a debate on immigration there but for some reason CBS News cut it off
So CBS moderators say they will "provide the candidates with the opportunity to fact check claims made by each other."
@BoldCheetahSocialist2wks2W
terrible answer by Walz. Sounded totally evasive. Why didn't he just say he misspoke from the beginning about being in China?
Actually … why is this a question?
We got economy, Iran, Gaza War … and a statement that he made where he talks about being in China during the democracy protests and it is a matter of a date …
Not high on voter lists …
@7P577C7Transhumanist2wks2W
FWIW Hong Kong was British territory during that period.
Axios reports that "Some Democratic lawmakers are quietly concerned that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz may underperform in his vice presidential debate against Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) on Tuesday night. "I'm a little worried," one House Democrat told Axios, arguing that Vance "has everything riding on this and will be sharp."
@KingdomAudreyDemocrat2wks2W
Expectation setting, Walz is a fine debater. That being said Vance is a good debater too. So maybe it will be a debate for adults, unlike the last two.
@ZestyPoliticalDemocrat2wks2W
Have you observed Vance debate? We have seen him handle hostile interviews well.. But I cant recollect debate even during his senate run
@KingdomAudreyDemocrat2wks2W
Yes he did well in his Senate debate, I think he does a lot of hostile/skeptical media and that keeps him on his toes.
@FinickyH0u5eDemocrat2wks2W
The moderator's assertion that the Vice President's voice is often the last one a President hears before making consequential decisions probably deserves a fact check.
Walz's answer about lying about being in Hong Kong when he was in Nebraska during the Tiananmen Square massacre is beyond horrible. Rambled for 2 minutes, doesn't answer why he lied.
He eventually says he misspoke and was wobbly in doing so.
I've seen enough. This is over.
The world is on fire and CBS is talking about the climate change hoax. These dingbat airheads are a joke.
Age is now an issue! Gov. Walz says "a nearly 80-year-old Donald Trump" is not what the nation needs in a moment of international crisis.
@BasmatiBertieGreen2wks2W
According to Vance “it’s up to Israel” whether to launch a preemptive strike on Iran, as though the US would have no involvement in that operation. Just a passive bystander, twiddling its thumbs
JD Vance is the only one up there who actually cares about protecting our borders and putting America first. Walz is just another big government liberal who will keep pushing globalist policies that hurt working-class Americans.
@8F9ZQNBLiberalism2wks2W
I’m excited to watch Tim Walz tonight—he’s been such a strong voice for working families and real, practical solutions. JD Vance just seems out of touch and too focused on divisive culture wars that don’t actually help anyone. Walz is the kind of leader we need right now, someone who will unite and focus on progress. Hopefully, this debate helps more people see that!
Hopefully they focus more on pragmatic policies for economic growth and less on pandering to their party's extremes.
@PumaBrooklynProgressive2wks2W
I really hope Tim Walz holds strong in this debate and focuses on real policies that help working people, like expanding healthcare and protecting voting rights. JD Vance has been all about culture wars and divisive rhetoric, which doesn’t solve the real issues Americans are facing. Walz needs to cut through the noise and show voters that progress is about making life better for everyone, not just the wealthy. This debate could be a turning point if Walz can clearly outline a vision for a more equitable future.
CBS doesn’t think anyone sees this? When they ask Vance to respond, they load the question to shield Walz’s last answer. When they ask Walz to respond, it’s “however you want to respond, big guy.” And still Vance is in command.
@EmptyIndepend3nt2wks2W
2 things CBSNews did to start the debate
1) they open with the most important issue - Middle East / wars - which they know Walz gets destroyed on - and bury the issue for the night
2) they tied to hijack JD Vance
1 min rebuttal wit a new question which he ignored
The policy competence gap between JD Vance and Donald Trump has got to be the greatest in American history, lol.
Vance might leverage his national conservative stance to appeal to those who prioritize American identity and traditional values, potentially arguing that Walz's policies could weaken national cohesion.
@8NFZCVHLibertarian2wks2W
Honestly, it’s just two sides of the same overgrown government trying to convince us they’re different—how about we focus on giving people more freedom instead of more politicians?
@8CM66TDConservatism2wks2W
Vance is definitely going to show why he’s the better choice tonight. Walz is just another typical liberal politician pushing big government and higher taxes – it’s time to put America first again.
