Iran launches missile and armed drone attack on Israel

Iran has fired a barrage of missiles and armed drones at Israel in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike in Damascus that killed several senior Iranian commanders, pushing the Middle East closer to a full-blown regional war.

Just before 2am Israeli time, sirens went off in Jerusalem, across southern and northern Israel and in the occupied Golan Heights. Skies over Israel were lit up by incoming missiles and Israeli air defence interceptors.

Daniel Hagari, Israel’s military spokesman, said that in total Iran had fired more than 200 killer drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles at Israel. Speaking at 3am local time, he said that the attack was “ongoing”, but that so far the vast majority of projectiles had been intercepted.

The Israeli paramedic service said a 10 year-old Bedouin girl had been critically wounded in the country’s south. Hagari said that minor damage had been done to an Israeli military base in the south of the country.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed “dozens” of missiles and drones had been launched against Israel. A post published by the account of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei on the social media platform X said: “The evil regime shall be punished.”

A US defence official said US forces in the region “continue to shoot down Iranian-launched drones”.

Iran’s mission to the UN said on X that the attack on Israel was in response to the April 1 strike on the Iranian consular building in Damascus. It said “the matt…

USA has already retaliated against terrorist attaches. I believe that we live in this world and I believe that our allies would assist us and help to keep us from overstepping retaliation.

They’re likely going to use this to push through the National Security Supplemental bill, including Ukraine funding, particularly after Trump declared his support for Ukraine “aid” yesterday. It will be cast as urgently necessary to replenish Israel’s air defense

As ran launches its retaliatory strikes, remember that Israel's military headquarters are intentionally located in the middle of civilian areas in Tel Aviv, which by the Israeli regime's own standard and actions in Gaza makes everyone there "human shields" and legitimate targets

Here is what to expect. So far, the attack has featured cruise missiles and drones. The drones appear to be Shahed 131 and 136.

It will take the drones about 9 hours to reach Israel. They are dealt with through Patriot (50% kill rate) and Sling of David (90% rate).

It takes cruise missiles 2 hours to reach Israel. They are countered by through Sling of David (90-95% kill rate) and Iron Dome (80-90% kill rate).

There are reports of ballistic missiles. However, they have no been confirmed. They take 1) 12 minutes to arrive. Arrow 3 is set up against it, which the IDF claims has a kill ratio of 99%.

I had plenty of criticism of Obama, but it’s worth considering how pitifully Biden has handled Netanyahu compared to him.

Biden is unwilling to stand up to Netanyahu in even the slightest way & risks single-handedly dragging us into a regional war, out of weakness or delusion.

Don’t fall for the emerging narrative that the Iranian strikes were entirely intercepted (99%) - the verified footage we are seeing (ie Al Jazeera) shows a bit of a different story. The Israelis have an interest in downplaying what happened tonight to their military targets.

- Jordan declares state of emergency, says it will intercept drones that violate its airspace

Biden retaliated against a Dem who called for him to step aside

Hillary Scholten, a first-term Democrat who flipped a traditionally Republican seat in 2022, was booted last week from from a coordinated effort between the the Biden campaign and the state party to elect candidates up and down the ticket, according to four people with knowledge of the situation, who were granted anonymity to speak candidly about private discussions.It happened soon after she called for Biden to step aside, those people said, which angered many Democrats behind the scenes. The Biden campaign was contacted by POLITICO Wednesday evening; Scholten was reinstated Thursday morning.“Rep. Scholten is welcome at the coordinated campaign and we look forward to campaigning with her this fall,” said Mia Ehrenberg, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, when asked about Scholten’s removal from the coordinated campaign.The initial decision to remove Scholten from the joint effort — which would have essentially cut her off from the combined field effort between the presidential, Senate and House races — came from the Michigan state party, according to two people familiar with the discussions. If she had remained excluded from the coordinated effort, it could’ve meant that when Democratic organizers were campaigning in her district, they would tout Biden and the party’s Senate nominee — but not Scholten.The Michigan Democratic Party declined to comment.
