The answer is partly correct, but beauty is not just Beauty, it's a side effect of a healthy ecosystem. If a forest is gone, it isn't just the loss of a pretty sight, it's an imbalance in air and water quality that could give your kid cancer.

That is true. I would like to add that humans are remarkably petty, sticking with what is already had and preferring the beautiful. A good example of this is the use of lead paint well into the 1900s despite its effects being known for decades.
