Progressive and moderate House Democrats scuffled over the war in Israel during a closed-door caucus meeting on Wednesday, with one lawmaker accusing another of saying a “ **** thing” about Muslims.
The exchange started when Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.) talked to her fellow members about a vigil she attended virtually in the wake of this weekend’s deadly attack by Hamas, according to six people familiar with the events that transpired.
As Wild told fellow House Democrats that she didn’t want any religious community to feel ostracized — noting that Muslim leaders weren’t present at the event she participated in — Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), a moderate Jewish Democrat and Israel hawk, loudly interjected.
Accounts differ, however, on whether Gottheimer was referring to Muslims or made an ill-timed remark in an unrelated conversation, with some attendees overhearing him saying “because they’re all guilty” and others saying he stated “because they should feel guilty.” A spokesperson for Gottheimer strongly denied that he was talking about Muslims.“Congressman Gottheimer never said anything about Muslims in today’s caucus meeting, a community he cares deeply about. Congressman Gottheimer said that the members of Congress who have not yet condemned Hamas terrorists should feel guilty,” said his spokesperson Chris D’Aloia.

That’s what happens when your party contains groups on opposite sides of an existential war.
@D1rectNoraRepublican7mos7MO
Republicans are divided, but at least one group doesn’t want to celebrate the slaughter of babies from another group.
@Bureaucr4tImpalaGreen7mos7MO
As much as the extremes among us wish us to be enemies, Jews and Muslims have usually been and will continue to be friends in this country.
@D1rectNoraRepublican7mos7MO
What percentage of American Muslims do you think would agree that's Hamas' actions were horrid? The CAIR statement and HAA statement caught me by suprise, as I'm gonna guess the number is lower than I thought
@Bureaucr4tImpalaGreen7mos7MO
Most would agree it’s horrid on absolute terms, but I think many Muslims and Jews feel so protective of their side that they’d rationalize or downplay atrocities by each. But that is their view of the Middle East, not each other in the US.
@PunditFrankConstitution7mos7MO
All sane Democrats need to either kick out the radicals or leave the party.
@D1rectNoraRepublican7mos7MO
I had no idea Democratic Politicians were members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). When they’re being interviewed on CNN & such that should be included in the introduction.
@9G5P77D7mos7MO
I don't like israel or palestine
@9G5CK387mos7MO
I support Israel during this conflict, and Hamas is a terrorist group.
@9G5NYDG7mos7MO
I feel as if the government needs to find a speaker of the house real quick and they need to work together instead of fighting
@9G5LQPDIndependent7mos7MO
It could effects the whole word if tbe violenc grows so i feel like we should be giving it more attention
@9G5KWP67mos7MO
House Democrats and Republicans need to focus on electing a speaker so that they can get back to performing their duties.
@9G5HQQN7mos7MO
The state of Israel has been controlling Palestine for years and limiting their growth. Hamas has been killing innocent citizens of Israel. I hope for peace in the Middle East.
@9G5HTTM7mos7MO
Mostly concern for Israel and war that’ll take many innocent lives.
@9G5GW6W7mos7MO
I could honestly care less, but Israel seems to be in a tight spot politically and conflictory
@9G5GVP27mos7MO
I believe it was coming eventually, so much tension between the two parties. I believe that Israel deserves better and Palestine has a lot of propaganda, if its ¨free Palestine" you should free Palestine from Hamas.
I need to know more about the war
@9G5DZ7T7mos7MO
It shines to light the barbaric tendencies and terrorism that has rosen upon palestine & israel. It questions how countries will be able to cooperate in peace moving forward when it always results in endless violence.
@9G5DKB9Peace and Freedom7mos7MO
Any type of war is the biggest problem because it can affect our country and our citizens saftey
@9G5BY6T7mos7MO
I think that we should stop not doing things and do something.
@9G5BPGV7mos7MO
We should start mobilizing and prepare for war with the Arabs.
@9G5943C7mos7MO
