Well, if you were homeless, and you had an extreme lack of trust for other people... would you take offered housing or shelters? Maybe you would, but others wouldn't, and giving them the ability to live their lives how they need to sounds like a much better option than just leaving them to sleep under cardboard or an underpass with nothing for shelter.

 @9GH272X from Missouri disagreed…5mos5MO

I would take the free housing. If someone is trusting you enough to give you FREE housing, you should be able to suck it up and trust the person offering you a place to live for free.

 @9GH43YH from Oregon disagreed…5mos5MO

I would take the shelter because, it would be better than sleeping outside in the cold and ending your life earlier than what it should be. I think it would be a better option than sleeping outside

 @9GH22S6 from Oregon disagreed…5mos5MO

I think it's important for homeless to be put in a shelter for multiple reason. It's important that of course those shelters are safe for the homeless but it's also important that while we as citizens are walking down clean, and safe streets that we pay tax dollars towards.

 @9JJ99LTLibertarianfrom Pennsylvania commented…2mos2MO

Under cardboard or underpass would still be considered public property would it not? I'm inclined to say that telling them "shelter or jail" seems like an infringement on civil liberties although I also see how occupying a public space could be interpreted as blocking access to it. I would say that if they're not in the way and not bothering anyone, I'd allow it.

 @9GN56PS  from Michigan agreed…5mos5MO

Why should be use government force to ban people from sleeping? They are not harming others, they have no where else to go. And shelters can have extremely unreasonable and strict requirements. It is not a good use of our resources to harass low income people.

 @9GN6GL7 from Massachusetts disagreed…5mos5MO

they have homeless shelters where they can sleep and if they refuse and sleep on publics or private property it can be trespassing or loitering and the punishment would be decided by the land owner.

 @9K23PQZ from New York disagreed…1mo1MO

You never know. They could all of a sudden become violent or something. Shelters have rules for a reason; beggars can't be choosers.

 @9FGGQKXCA Common Sense from Colorado disagreed…6mos6MO

Its dumb and squatters shouldnt be allowed to steal peoples homes just because they are having trouble in life.

 @9F8TZR9 from California disagreed…7mos7MO

I don't believe in funding for homeless who didn't even try in life, or at least do better and get a job.

 @9GH4LCG from California agreed…5mos5MO

Where else would they sleep? Our gov complains about this but yet doesnt provide a shelter so the least you can do is let them.

 @9GGKLTPForward from Missouri agreed…5mos5MO

Homelessness cannot be solved by shelters. Most shelters require money daily for providing shelter to the homeless. Which creates segregation and discrimination against the homeless population that cannot provide to a shelter that requires even only one dollar per day. Free housing or free encampment sites need to be made available to homeless individuals and more inclusive services need to be provided to ensure homeless citizens are reintegrated into the population.

 @9FBP8CSLibertarian from Texas disagreed…6mos6MO

I think the homeless if given the opportunity; taken to a shelter to stay. If they deny and do not vacate the premises then moved to jail.

 @9FB8P29 from Arizona disagreed…7mos7MO

It is not compassionate to allow the homeless to rot in the streets where they also endanger the public. These people need help, not neglect. Additionally, there are major problems with sanitation in cities throughout the country due to the lack of facilities on the streets.

 @9F9G8PG from Washington disagreed…7mos7MO

Homeless when allowed to live on public property will increase crime rates, spread of disease, open drug use, and promote deteriorating mental health among the homeless population. It is our duty to protect the vulnerable, not enable self destructive behavior.

 @9F9LSGP from Texas disagreed…7mos7MO

I feel like they should get a shelter try to find a job because it is possible to start from scratch.

 @9FBVKYQ from California disagreed…6mos6MO

This only invites more people to become homeless which is already a growing problem. We need to come up with other solutions and toughen up laws on drugs, which leads to homelessness. Mentally ill individuals need care and because of their mental illness they may not agree to what is best for them or their community.

 @9F7VJGB from Texas disagreed…7mos7MO

It encourages more of the homeless to gather in an area, thus creating a space of poverty, sickness, and hopelessness.

 @9GJKJXK from Michigan agreed…5mos5MO

people that are homeless should have more opportunities to have at least some food and small shelter because they are people to

If homeless refuse to be in Encampments and stay on public property its technically not illegal and they have right so they can. They may not be comfortable in the homeless encampments.

 @9F9W88M from New York commented…7mos7MO

Correct. Sometimes the environment in encampments are very uncomfortable and have very unreasonable rules. I really don't blame them (the homeless).

 @9FLL2YNSocialist from Texas agreed…6mos6MO

read homeless people's experiences with shelters man it's bad
a lot of people report things like crowding, disease, and rampant physical and sexual violence, especially towards women and lgbtqia+ people, particularly trans people

 @9955TQB from Colorado commented…1yr1Y

I don't believe in giving free money or food but I do in employment for the homeless that pays.

 @97MSGJ5 from Oregon commented…1yr1Y

There are no lands up for grabs anymore, yet hundreds of thousands of acres sit completely unused and unprotected, all over this country. Everyone needs to lay their head somewhere at night, but not everyone has the ability to fit in with society. Those people have nowhere else to go but our streets, where they can at least get a little public assistance or beg for money.

 @97T78V6Republican from Alaska commented…1yr1Y

There should be a sponsorship organization in the United States ( like a compassion international Christian ministry where you can adopt and send money to take care of a child in Africa) where we can adopt a homeless person and sponsor them so they can get care. .

Every day, at mostly every corner or stoplight, I see someone asking for money. If I give them my money, I don't know what they are spending it on. It is truly sad to see individuals suffering without a home and I wish I could help everyone, but it is also sad not knowing who actually needs the help. If an individual is offered shelter, and they refused it, then they obviously don't want to succeed. Why should I have to wake up early every day to make it to work, where I have to provide services for others, when these individuals are only looking for an easy way to live and ask me for money? America is the land of opportunity, and one must work hard for it and make sacrifices in order to succeed.

 @9FL2VND from California disagreed…6mos6MO

Homeless individuals are dangerous and sporadic people who are most likely addicted to drugs, they pose a significant threat to regular citizens and children in the areas that they stay in.

Homeless people should not be allowed to sleep in public and all these support systems we have for them need to stop its just encouraging more homeless people to stay homeless

 @9GH62HLIndependence from Texas agreed…5mos5MO

I do not like to see Homeless drugged out people laying on the ground on the sidewalk so i think they should create a free shelter for them to fix their lives.

 @9FTRLC8 from Texas agreed…6mos6MO

Congress shall make no law abridging the right of the people peaceably to assemble. It's a simple as that. So long as homeless people are peaceful, they must be allowed to assemble.

 @9F75T5BIndependent from California disagreed…7mos7MO

I think the homeless should not be aloud on the streets sleeping because of the public's safety. They should be taken to a shelter away from the public.
