Cutting carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 is not realistic. I don't think we should be making promises we can't keep.

I do think an effort should be made to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, to reduce dependence on countries like Russia, Venezuela, Iran and Saudi Arabia, to begin preparing for the eventuality where we run out of fossil fuels, and to reduce climate change. Maybe 50% reduction per capita by 2050 is doable with more energy efficient homes, more nuclear energy, more electric cars, different ways of raising livestock, etc.

My logic is this - civilizational advancement has reduced the impact of natural disasters by a greater amount than the increased likelihood of natural disasters due to climate change, therefore mitigation efforts should not come at the cost of kneecapping our civilization and making our nation weaker.
