(Houston) Texas’ 2nd Congressional District is a gerrymandered mess spanning from the south 610 loop, up the northwest side along 290, and cutting across north Houston into Kingwood. That seat is currently occupied by incumbent Dan Crenshaw, a Trump supporting republican who thinks that red flag laws are a good idea. Crenshaw also supports the continued inhumane treatment of immigrants and their children along Texas’ border. Meet his challenger, Elliott Robert Scheirman. Scheirman, who has worked for 13 years as a supply chain manager in the energy and tech sectors, is a Houston native running for nomination in the upcoming Libertarian Party conventions in a 3-way contested race. Since the Libertarian Party of Texas is not a primary party, Texas state law dictates that conventions must follow the GOP and Democratic primary elections to be held on March 3rd. The Libertarians are set to hold precinct conventions Tuesday March 10th, and county conventions the following Saturday, March 14th where his nomination will be decided. “The decision to run on the Libertarian Party ticket was an easy one,” Scheirman said, “The GOP and Democratic parties have a long tradition of fighting over which way to control you and the Libertarians just want to empower individuals to take charge over their lives. We share a lot of common ground with people in terms of seeing problems in society, and we think that partisan power struggles are the worst way to solve them. Whenever bipartisan compromise occurs, the people are usually on the losing side of the agreement.” Elliott’s campaign is centered around promoting humane immigration, respect for property rights, preserving free speech, reducing the amount of victimless crimes on the books (including legalization and decriminalization of drug possession), opposing republican and democratic efforts to restrict gun rights for innocent people, prioritizing adding gender identity and sexual orientation as federally protected classes, seeking free open international trade as a foreign policy rather than endless war, and preserving women’s right to bodily autonomy. “I think people who traditionally vote for both old parties can find things that resonate with my campaign. Nobody wants the government to control them; Most people vote to defend themselves against partisan attempts restrict their freedom. It is time to vote for something you believe in, rather than against.” For more information about the campaign, or to include Elliott Scheirman on issues questionnaires, please visit www.ScheirmanForCongress.com, www.facebook.com/scheirmanforcongress, or contact the campaign directly via ScheirmanForCongress@gmail.com or (713)364-8092.
