Ted Cruz is a Republican U.S. Senator from Texas and the former director of policy planning at the Federal Trade Commission. In 2012 he defeated incumbent U.S. Senate Democrat Paul Sadler in what many observers considered to be the biggest upset of the 2012 elections. Cruz is a staunch social conservative and advocate of gun rights.
