“I agree that it should be prosecuted using the court-martial powers under the UCMJ, but we also need a safer environment not only for victims to report crimes, but for would-be victims to work in. I served in the US Navy and saw many crimes go unreported because the officers in charge did not want to rock the boat by taking on criminal charges against their subordinates. If a sexual assault is committed by any US Armed Forces personnel, it needs to be treated the same as it would in the civilian sector. These people have taken an oath to defend against foreign and domestic enemies, and I believe this would fall under the domestic category.”
