The U.S. federal economy shutdown (October 1st-16th, 2013) occurred after Congress did not pass legislation appropriating funds for fiscal year 2014. 800,000 federal employees were furloughed without pay while an additional 1.3 million were required to report to work without knowing when they would be paid.
