Question 3 would require a background check for all gun purchases made between two unlicensed individuals. The proposition exempts hunters and gun transfers between family members. Federal law currently does not require background checks for gun purchases made between two unlicensed individuals. Proponents of gun control call this the "gun show" loophole because it exempts 60% of gun sales in the U.S. from background checks. Proponents of the proposition include the Maine Chiefs of Police Association and The Brady Campaign to prevent Gun Violence. Opponents of the proposition include the NRA argue that it will not stop gun violence and make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to protect themselves.  See recent Question 3 news
